This presentation for the general public is designed to dispel many harmful but widespread myths about grieving and to provide practical information to enable bereaved persons to better understand and cope with loss of a significant other. There will be discussion regarding appropriate expectations mourners can have for themselves, the different demands posed by different types of death, and constructive ways of dealing with bereavement distress. By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:
- Differentiate between loss, secondary loss, grief, and mourning
- Appreciate the presence of trauma in most major losses
- Understand the difference in grief after anticipated deaths and those that are sudden and unexpected
- Identify at least ten courses of action that will help a mourner accommodate his/her loss healthily
- Describe what can and cannot be expected as a mourner goes on after the death of a loved one

This compassionate program will be helpful to anyone who is experiencing grief or loss in their lives.

HOW TO REGISTER:
This workshop examines grief and mourning in the workplace both within and outside of the work setting. The challenges of sudden traumatic loss and of anticipated loss will be compared and contrasted, and suggestions will be made for effective intervention strategies. At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- "Identify unique grief issues that present themselves in the workplace
- Understand how secondary traumatic stress reactions and disenfranchised grief are critical issues after loss in the workplace
- List at least three substantive differences between grief after sudden loss and after anticipated loss
- Explain how violence in the workplace affects the bereavement of the workers
- Outline an approach to bereaved workers

The Professional Caregivers program has been approved for 3 contact hours by the South Carolina Nurses Association.
The South Carolina Board of Social Work Examiners grants social workers 3 non-social work hours for attending the professional seminar, pending board approval.
SCLLR grants Funeral Directors 3 clock hours for attending the professional session.
Chaplains may apply these hours towards their required continuing education.
Participants must attend 90% of the educational offering to receive a certificate of attendance. No partial credit will be given.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Therese A. Rando, Ph.D., BCETS, BCBT is a clinical psychologist in Warwick, Rhode Island. She is the Clinical Director of The Institute for the Study and Treatment of Loss, which provides mental health services through psychotherapy, training, supervision, and consultation, and specializes in: loss and grief; traumatic stress; and the psychosocial care of persons with chronic, life-threatening, or terminal illness, and their loved ones. Current professional works include treatment of complicated mourning, loss of a child, the interface between posttraumatic stress and grief, anticipatory mourning, and specialized intervention techniques in the treatment of traumatic bereavement.
Dr. Rando holds a doctoral degree in Psychology from the University of Rhode Island and has received advanced training in psychotherapy and in medical consultation-liaison psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University Medical School and University Hospitals of Cleveland. A former consultant to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Hospice Education Program for Nurses, she developed its program for training hospice nurses to cope with loss, grief, and terminal illness. Her current research interests focus on the operations and courses of anticipatory and post death mourning, development of a short-term treatment protocol for survivors of traumatic loss and construction of a self-help program for coping with the sudden death of a loved one. Dr. Rando has published 70 works pertaining to the clinical aspects of thanatology.
