Alan Max Myers, 60, loving husband of Brana Patterson Myers, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 13, 2023, after a courageous six-year battle with cancer.
Alan was born February 4, 1963, in Greenville, to Harold Max and Mary Fleming Myers.
He graduated from Berea High School in 1981 and North Greenville University in 1984. He faithfully served his community through his roles as a firefighter, Assistant Chief, and Lead Training Officer at Berea Fire Department for almost 40 years.
He served as a Sunday school teacher and youth volunteer at both Berea First Baptist Church and Pelham Road Baptist Church. After his cancer diagnosis in 2018, he worked with Firefighter’s National Cancer Network as a mentor to other firefighters across the nation with cancer. He worked with firefighters in South Carolina to aid in the passing of the SC Firefighter Cancer and Health Benefit Plan, and developed strategies leading to protocols and training that better protected firefighters from cancer-causing elements associated with firefighter cancer.
In addition to his beloved wife of 34 years and his parents, Alan is survived by his children, Caroline Myers Southerland (Blake), Susannah Myers Lewis (Andrew), and Carter Alan Myers. He was “Al Pop” to four grandchildren, Elleigh and Macon Southerland, Baker and Whitaker Lewis. Alan is also survived by siblings, Michael Myers (Karen) and Rhonda Myers Watson (David); along with nephews, Brandon Myers and Reynor Watson; nieces, Amanda Myers, Mackenzie Myers, and Kaylyn Watson; and many other special cousins and relatives. Alan’s very best friends, members of “The Crew”, Gary Brock, Brian Batson, David Tarrant, and Edmund Watson remain as steadfast examples of friendship and brotherhood.
Throughout Alan’s cancer journey, he was served well by the surgeons, doctors and nurses of Prisma Cancer Institute, and DaVita Dialysis Center in Greer.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, August 18, 2023, at 1:30 p.m., at Berea First Baptist Church, with Dr. John Roy, Reverend Sam Coates, and Dr. Chad Rickenbaker officiating. The celebration will continue with refreshments and fellowship immediately following the service.
