His family and friends are having a private celebration of life service.

Known to many as a gentle giant or a big teddy bear, Alix Bernard, 62, beloved husband of Mary Robb Bernard, and father to three kittens, Anya, Carmel, and Hershey, went to heaven on Tuesday, November 9, 2021. For those of us lucky enough to have known Alix, our world has hit a bump. He will live in our hearts and minds forever. Choose to be grateful and thankful for the time you had with him.

Born on January 28, 1959, in Anderson, IN, he was the son of Rosalee (Nealis) Bernard and the late Donald G. Bernard. He is survived by his brother Kirby (Sheree) Bernard, their daughter Amanda (Kyle) Gambrell, his sister Marty (Greg) Moheban, their three sons, Matthew (Christina) Moheban, Joseph (Ann Marie) Moheban and Jordan Moheban, his uncle Roger (Nancy) Nealis and his uncle Ricky. Alix really loved his family so very, very much and felt he was privileged and lucky to have them!

Alix was the proud owner, along with Mary, of Joe’s Place Bookstore in Greenville, SC. Alix met so many people at Joe’s Place who became friends. He enjoyed working at the bookstore but enjoyed retirement even more!

He loved animals but especially was known as the cat rescuer. He even once tried to rescue an opossum! He had so many hobbies including building street rods and motorcycles, models of cars, planes, and horror figures. Reading was his passion (obviously, he owned a bookstore) and he really enjoyed creating art. He did graphite and colored pencil drawings, watercolor paintings, and bone carvings. He was a big fan of Bob Rossi. But of all the hobbies he had, playing his mandolin was his favorite. He looked forward to Friday nights at the Oolenoy Community Center.

Mary, Sending you condolences for the loss of Alix. I have many good memories of his warm, quick smile and quick wit as we grew up in Anderson. He made the world a better place.

Mary, I am sorry for your loss. God speed Alex. Save me a seat!

So saddened to learn of Alix's passing. I enjoyed many mornings this summer chatting with him at our pool and I looked forward to him being my neighbor when their house was completed. Always friendly with a warm hello. I will miss him.

This comes as a shock and tremendous loss, I met Alex many years ago when he joined Tri-City Rod & Custom Car Club, He always had a smile on his face and I will remember him until the Good Lord calls me home. Good Speed my friend.

Alix was one of my many book world friends and he was awesome! Just yesterday I was out looking for new book adventure and saw a copy of the MAD magazine compilation of Spy vs Spy. The first time I brought him one I remember his face lights up and he said, I love Spy vs Spy! I thought, How many men that age get excited over a cartoon! That was Alix, still young with memories. I will miss seeing and hearing him play his mandolin with the group of mountain musicians at the Pickens Flea Market. Brother, you are a good memory.

Mary our dear sweet friend. So sorry to hear about Alix, he was such a good man. And a teddy bear to our fur babies. Our kitty fur babies were there to welcome him to heaven. We love you so much.
