Barbara Knaff Whitlock, age 90, resident of Greer, SC, and wife of the late Joseph Francis Whitlock, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late John Joseph and Agnes Griffith Knaff.
Barbara graduated from Springfield High School, Springfield, PA and received her bachelor’s degree from the Pennsylvania State University. She subsequently moved to Middletown, DE to accept a teaching position with the Appoquinimink School District. As the prettiest young teacher in Middletown, she met and married the love of her life, Joe Whitlock. Their marriage was blessed with one child, Christina, and they were always surrounded by many friends during their 30 years together until Joe’s death in 1986.
Mrs. Whitlock retired after 35 years of teaching math, science, and home economics. She enjoyed cooking and baking (her recipes have now been handed down through several generations), Penn State football, all Philadelphia sports teams, and summers spent vacationing at the family beach house in Surf City, NJ.
After almost 50 years in Delaware, Mrs. Whitlock relocated to Greer, SC to be near her daughter, Tina, son-in-law, Hampton, and her loving grandchildren. She was a parishioner of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Simpsonville where she was an active member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry.
Her entire life was dedicated to her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Christina “Tina” Whitlock Painter (Hampton) of Greer; grandchildren, Allison Painter Nilsson (Eric), Robert Hampton Painter IV (Weezie), and Joseph Francis Painter (Kylie); and her great-grandchildren, Thomas Nilsson, James Nilsson, Quinn Painter, and Emma Painter.
In addition to her husband and parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, John “Jack” Joseph Knaff, Jr. and his wife Janet.
A private memorial service for Barbara will be held at a later date.
