Betty Jane Owen, beloved wife, mother, minister and friend, died peacefully surrounded by family on September 19, 2021, in Greenville, SC.

Betty was born July 10, 1940, in Bristol, Virginia, to “Jack” and Aurelia Kilgore.

On September 26, 1959, she happily married Ken Owen, who was her partner in life and ministry for almost 62 years. Betty served alongside her husband as the Director of Music for more than 40 years until she retired in 2007. She was known for her deep love for people along with her creativity and holiday musical productions that presented the gospel message to thousands.

She is survived by her husband, three children, nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. One of her greatest joys in life was to be “Nana” and spoil her grandchildren.

Besides spending time with her family, Betty had a love for the holidays, particularly Christmas, and was passionate about traveling, solving puzzles, playing Farkle and caring for her mischievous dog, Gus. Betty was known for her strong visionary leadership, compassion for people, and her love for music.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Greenville First located at 1105 Haywood Road, Greenville, SC. Visitation will take place at 10:00 am followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am.

Saddened to hear of the passing of Betty. Memories of Betty from the construction of First Assembly back in 1985-1986

Many great memories of Betty leading the music ministry at First Assembly - weekly, Christmas, but particularly the wonderful Easter musicals and pageantry. We miss being there and miss being a part of her music leadership.

Pastor Ken, Sharon and I are praying for you and family at this time. While your hearts are heavy, Heaven is sweeter and we know Betty’s smile is a smile of rejoicing as she stands with her loving Savior.

Carole and I were so saddened to hear of the loss of such a wonderful lady. We spent many happy years in ministry and also on a personal level with Ken and Betty Owen, and we will always cherish the special memories we have. Our prayers are with you during this time.

Betty has a special place in our hearts. We have loving memories of times spent singing songs of praise while worshiping our Lord and Savior, under her ministry of music. Praying for Pastor Owen and other family members.

Thank you Sis. Betty for your mentoring and your endless love in my life. You blessed my family at Central A/G and my parents loved you! You embraced Bob when I brought him home from college and shared your endless love with him. Our ministry will always be influenced by you.
