Bricelyn Johnston Cantey lived her life as a fiercely independent woman and died in her sleep, just as she wished, on August 7, 2022.
She was born on March 8, 1930 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to the late Edward Richards Johnston and Kathryn Walker Johnston.
Bricelyn grew up in Decatur, Georgia, graduating from Decatur Girl’s High in 1947. After high school, she continued her education, graduating with honors from the University of Georgia with a math degree and she remained a loyal Georgia football fan until she died. After finishing college, Bricelyn worked as a statistician for the CDC in Atlanta. She worked as a bookkeeper for a variety of Greenville businesses.
Bricelyn loved her family, her church (The Church of the Redeemer), bridge, and Georgia football. Her favorite times were spent with her grandchildren.
Bricelyn was an excellent golfer and tennis player for many years. She was very competitive in her sports and in any card game, especially bridge. At 92, she was still the winner against whomever she played in cards.
Her family is grateful to her many friends in her townhouse complex that checked on her every day over the years. We are especially grateful to Monica from Comfort Keepers.
Bricelyn was the mother to Kathy Church (Preston), Whit Cantey (Anne), and Mark Cantey (Wendy); grandmother to Lee, Field, Chandler, Abby, Michael, and Jack; and sister to her brother, Dick Johnston (Pat). She loved all of her many nieces, nephews, and their children.
In addition to her beloved parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Joyce Chambers.
