Charles Gary “Bub” Barton, 79, devoted husband of over 56 years to Cheryl S. Barton, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2023.
Born March 10, 1944, in Huntington Park, CA, he was the eldest son of the late Grady and Eunice McCurley Barton. Gary and Cheryl first met at church, while she was playing the angel in the Christmas play, thanks to Gary’s sister. Due to Cheryl not having her glasses on during the play, it was shortly after that that she saw him and they both knew it was love at first sight. They later went on to marry, in September of 1966, at the very church where they had met and their love story began.
Gary was a welder and pipe fitter. He assisted in the construction of the Duke Energy plant. Gary had a need for speed, and in his free time, he enjoyed drag racing and restoring cars with his sons, and later with his grandson.
His memory will be forever cherished by his loving wife and partner in crime, Cheryl; two precious sons, Allan Barton, Jeff Barton, and wife, Rachel Barton; two adoring grandchildren, Aaron Barton and Brianna Barton; his siblings, Judy Batson Ricks and Toby Ray Barton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lou Tate; and brothers-in-law, Gerald Tate, the Reverend Huey Batson, and W.G. Ricks; and sister-in-law, Linda Blum-Barton.
A visitation will be held Saturday, May 27, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown followed by the funeral service to celebrate his life at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
