Luck landed me as a neighbor of the Galleys for a good chunk of time. I can measure it by the watching of little Marty grow into big Marty, Dons retirement and about 3 phases of landscaping & gardens.
Looking back I'm appreciating Don as a quiet intellect with a never ending appreciation for art & design. Although he'd let one (me) ramble on about knowledge of such & such, he'd never correct or disagree or for that matter interrupt to give his own opinions. Even though he must have had many different thoughts or feelings on "whatever" he wasn't one to reveal them. And I shamefully never thought to ask.
That is a kind & rare gift I try to live up to with no avail.
Among other quiet kindnesses, he & his lawn tractor rescued me without hesitation several times when I foolishly was taking on our lawn with a push mower, up & downhill in mid summer. He swept in & swept out. No waiting for thank yous. Hero of my day.
The new owners of the home he built in Orchard Park are beneficiaries of Don's unique vision that withstands the test of time. I benefit from the beautiful gardens I get to reside next to.
More & more appreciating the mastery of planning & design as they reliably transform in color & texture season to season.
Those are gifts Donald Arthur Galley leaves for us.
