Dr. George P. Hoffmann, III, “Pete”, age 76, of Greenville, died Saturday, October 15, 2022.

Born in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late Dr. George P. Hoffmann, Jr. and Shadie Armstrong Hoffmann.

Dr. Hoffmann was devoted to his family and friends, and is perhaps best known for his devotion to dentistry, the practice of which he continued for more than 40 years until his recent retirement. A graduate of Clemson University and the Medical University of South Carolina School of Dentistry, he was a fellow of the American College of Dentists, and a member of the American Dental Association (ADA), South Carolina Dental Association, and Greenville County Dental Society. Dr. Hoffmann served on numerous ADA Committees, was the former chairman of the Greenville Hospital System Department of Dentistry, and was a founding member and chairman of Stonemark Services, a not-for-profit organization dealing with insurance services for South Carolina dentists. In 2019, he received the most prestigious award of the South Carolina Dental Association, The George P. Hoffmann, Jr. Distinguished Dentist Award, named for his father, who was also a dentist.

Prior to college, Dr. Hoffmann served as a member of United States Air Force Special Warfare, as a Pararescue (PJ) specialist and was admitted to the Order of the Jolly Green Giants by having served as a member of the 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron at Da Nang Air Base from August 7, 1968 to March 6, 1970. Across two tours, he was thrice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, a valor decoration for heroism and our nation’s highest award for extraordinary aerial achievement, in recognition of the rescue of 9 U.S. Air Force personnel, 3 crewmen, and 1 pilot. He next served as a dentist in the United States Army before returning to Greenville, where he went into private practice.

Dr. Hoffmann was also a highly talented photographer and enjoyed capturing landscapes and scenes of nature throughout the world.

He is survived by his longtime partner, Carol Gregory; two daughters, Susan Merrill and her husband Scott and Jennifer Roach and her husband Kevin; two grandchildren, Park and Cameron Merrill; a sister, Nancy Hoffmann Collins; and a brother, Bill Hoffmann.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Hoffmann.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown, followed by the memorial service at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel.

Dr. Hoffman was a wonderful dentist, a dear man, and a friend to all. I am so saddened to learn of his passing. I always looked forward to my dentist appts. because Dr. Hoffman was a person I was always glad to see. He was one of the funniest, most positive, kindest people I’ve ever known. He was so careful with my dental care and never wanted me to have the slightest bit of discomfort. I trusted him completely. My heart goes out to his family, and to his wonderful staff whom I know loved him & misses him greatly. I always appreciated the positive atmosphere within the office, and the strong bonds of friendship among you all. To Carol, I am so very sorry. You two were a wonderful couple, and I was always glad to share laughs with you both in years past at my appointments. I don’t even know where to start. Of course my condolences to his family and friends and sweet, loving Carol. Not many people walk around saying “gosh I love my dentist! “But I did, with all my heart. Always a smile and kind word. Always so supportive after I lost my husband to cancer, asking about the kids and how I was doing. He gave me my smile back! Literally and figuratively. He will be missed so very much but will be in my heart forever. God bless you Dr. Hoffman!

My heart is broken at the passing of Dr. Pete. He was my dentist for over 40 years. He was always so kind, understanding and creative in dealing with my anxiety and teeth and he was a friend. You always felt like part of the family at his office. My deepest sympathy to Carol, Dr. Hoffman’s family and office staff. Keeping you in my prayers. He will be so missed.

To Dr. Hoffmann’s family and friends - I am so very sorry for your loss. Dr. Hoffmann was my dentist for over 30 years, and I will always remember his kindness and gentleness. I will also always be grateful for the way he nurtured my interest in photography. He took the time to talk with me about cameras, software, and more. Best of all, he encouraged me to take photography classes. Because of Dr. Hoffmann, I joined the OLLI program at Furman, where I not only learned a lot, but also made great friends and got to do some traveling. Dr. Hoffmann was always excited to see my shots, and I’m proud to say I have one of his beautiful photos framed and hanging in my home. I will miss him, and I pray you all find comfort in your memories of him.

To Carol and family I will really miss Pete. We had a lot of good times together over the years. We were also colleagues, he was my dentist and i was his physician. I wish I could express myself as well as my husband Greg but I can not. I am so heart broken just like all of you are. I met Pete the summer of 1970 when I started dating my wife Lynn, daughter of WR and Gloria Williams .I was impressed with his nimbleness as he was able to cut a flip when he fell off her family's roof as he was cleaning leaves and landed on his feet! Pete was also a legendary DKA fraternity brother of mine at Clemson. Lynn and I attended many functions with Pete during the days. Later he was our good friend and dentist even though my work carried us from Florida to Rhode Island to Texas and Puerto Rico and back to Florida. We would commute back to Greenville to check in with Dr.Pete. He will be greatly missed by his dental family, local friends and Clemson DKA brothers.

Dear family, friends and staff of Pete Hoffmann: We were so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Hoffmann and we share in you grief and loss. Pete has been our dentist and friend for 40+ years. He was an excellent dentist and really cared for his patients. He has met us after regular office hours for a few emergency situations and never complained. Pete just cared. We often had conversations about his photography hobby and I admired the photos in his office. We shared techniques for renovating old photos. We also swapped stories about the Vietnam war since we were both there at the same time. I will really miss you Pete. We hope you will have eternal rest and peace in the heavenly home you so much deserve. We will continue to pray for the family, friends and staff that knew Pete so well. We loved him too.

Dear family of Pete, Carol, and all the Powdersville Dental Associates, Al and I felt the loss of Pete when we received the letter indicating his retirement due to his Drs. indicating he could no longer work. We knew he had been ill for quite awhile but when we saw his obituary, we were, and are, deeply saddened. My first dentist in Greenville was Dr. George P. Hoffman, Jr., when I was in my early 30’s. Then Pete became my dentist, for over 40 years. When I married Al in 1992, he needed a dentist but said he never had liked any he had before. When he began with Pete he was happy as could be! They found common hobbies with their photography and they enjoyed talking with each other. As everyone else has said, Pete was a remarkable dentist, caring and always deciding what would be best, even if it meant he needed to redo something that broke before the specific time frame ended, meaning he took the hit, not us. His life revolved around family and his patients, except when traveling with Carol overseas to capture amazing scenery to photograph. There will never be anyone like Pete Hoffman. Peace be with him and all who were loved by him.

To all of Dr. Hoffmann's loved ones - God bless you. It is something very special and rare, when a professional can connect and make all of his patients feel secure and to feel, as if you are truly special to him...he did that every time. I am so grateful. thankful, and blessed to have had his amazing expertise, but so much more his loving friendship for so many years. He holds a very special place in my heart, and I will always miss him.

My deepest sympathies to the family, staff, patients and friends of this wonderful man. I became Dr. Hoffman’s patient as a small child after the passing of his dad. Dr. Hoffman III was just as wonderful as Dr. Hoffman II, making sure I was relaxed and comfortable as young children may feel anxious about things that go on in that strange reclining chair and that silly space aged glasses. Once I left home, leaving SC, I would still return home at least twice a year to see Dr. Hoffman. I have not had any luck finding another practice that can complete with the level of service and quality of staff that my entire family has been blessed to have experienced. I loved walking the halls, peeking into the rooms and taking in all the photographs that Dr. Hoffman had decorating the walls. In that moment, I felt like I was there too. Dear Carol, We are so sorry. It just knocked the air out of me. We were patients when he set up his practice. Over the years he became much more than our dentist...he became a dear friend to our family. Pete was kind with a great sense of humor. He always asked about how our children were doing. Dennis and I are truly sorry at the loss of Dr. Hoffmann. He was unquestionably the best dentist that we ever had. The Upstate area has lost a good friend and an excellent professional. May he rest in peace!

Thanks to Dr. Pete, he was such a great dentist. His humor kept your mind off the pain. He did a lot of work for our family. One week he came in every day, even Sat. and Sunday to check a drain that a specialist had botched up. Our prayers are with his family.

Very saddened by this news. Met Pete when he came back to Greenville to take over his father’s practice. Pete was extraordinary in every way and will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Godspeed Pete.

My sincere condolences to Dr. Hoffman’s family, friends and sweet sweet Carol. This is a very very sad day for me and many many others who were so blessed by being under Dr. Hoffman’s dental care. For me, it was so much more than that! I truly loved this man. He was like a father to me when my family is so far away. His advice about my career and my family, and the death of my husband was so appreciated and unparalleled . I always told him “if you retire, I’m just gonna have all my teeth pulled and get dentures!” Only because I could not imagine having any one else ever take care of my dental health.
