Dr. Robert Louis Coles, 78, husband of the late Patty Coles, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2021.
Born in Mckeesport, PA, he was a son of the late John and Jesse Steiner Coles.
Dr. Coles completed his Undergraduate studies at Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA and received his DMD from University of Pittsburgh. Following his oral surgery residency in Augusta, GA, he served in the US Air Force at Sumter Air Force Base. Dr. Coles practiced oral surgery for over fifty years. He was well respected in his field and received numerous awards including the SC Lifetime Achievement Award which is named after him. He was past president of The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Coles was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Greenville.
He is survived by his daughters, Kelly Smith and husband, Kevin, and Kimberly Coles-Huggins; son, Robert Coles, II and wife, Patricia; grandson, Paul Huggins, II and wife, Alexandra Barrett; three granddaughters, Jordan Smith, Ashlee Smith, and Jessie Huggins; one great-granddaughter, Lily Stevens; brother, Thomas Coles and wife, Faye; sister-in-law, Carol Coles; two nieces, Heather Coles and Jodi Dolin; and two nephews, Matthew Coles and Joshua Coles.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Coles, II.
The funeral service will be held Friday, September 3, 2021 at 5:30 pm. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Southeast followed by a time of visitation. Burial will be in Cannon Memorial Park at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 4th.
The family would appreciate those in attendance wearing masks and social distancing due to some family members with compromised immune systems.
