Duke McClary Haynie, 87, devoted husband of 58 years to Seleda Haynie, passed away at home on Sunday, August 20, 2023.
Duke was born on February 28, 1936, in Jackson, MS. He grew up in Fayetteville, NC, where he was raised by his parents, the late Jack Duke and Mary Robbins Haynie.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.S. and M.S. in industrial relations. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi fraternity. In his early years at Chapel Hill, he met Seleda while attending a dance. After dating for five years, they married on July 10, 1965 and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where they started their lives together. They were affectionally called by friends and family as the Duke and Duchess.
In 1970, Duke and Seleda moved to Greenville, SC and opened a staffing agency, Dunhill Personnel, which later became All Star Staffing. They were in business for 41 years. In 1999, Duke was presented with the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Beasley for his significant contributions to the state of South Carolina.
He was a longtime member of the Poinsett Club in Greenville, SC. He enjoyed a variety of hobbies throughout his life, including fishing, hunting, and golf, and he was an avid supporter of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Duke was a faithful member of Taylors First Baptist Church.
His memory will continue on with his loving wife, Seleda Haynie; and their precious daughter, Laura Haynie.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 28, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown Chapel.
