Everett Posey “Bill” Godfrey, Esq., 68, loving husband and law partner of Mary Alice Godfrey, Esq., passed away on Friday, May 14, 2021.

Born in Greer, SC, he was the son of the late Everett Posey, Sr. and Hazel Scott Godfrey.

He was a graduate of Furman University, class of 1975 and University of South Carolina School of Law, class of 1989. He was previously employed with Liberty Life Insurance Co. as a Senior Underwriter. Prior to opening private practice, he served as public defender of Richland County and Greenville County and was Chief Public Defender of Pickens County.

He loved his family, the law, politics, reading primary international news sources and his dogs, Mibi and Sadie.

In addition to his wife, Mary Alice, he is survived by sons, Zac (Emily) Godfrey, and Mac Hobbs; daughters, Angie (Scott) Smith, and Chrissie (Chris) Scheuerman; grandchildren, Elizabeth “Boogie” Watson, Chelsea McNamara, Jonathan Smith, Bailey Scheuerman; and his beloved dog, Sadie.

The family will have a gathering on Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave, Montgomery, AL 36104.

Bill was a special man. His smile would light up a room. He cared about others and impacted the lives of the people he met on his journey. It seems unreal that he is gone. My prayers for the family. Pictures hold the memories that will keep him near.

Our office at the courthouse has fond memories of Bill and his sweet family that came into the office. We thought he had a wonderful voice and was always kind when he came in. His family, that we were blessed to meet were a joy each time they came in. We will certainly pray for you all as I know he will be so missed.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I thought very highly of Bill. It was always a pleasure to work with him and his kindness to me will never be forgotten.
