Gary Paul Metcalf, 72, husband of Rebecca “Becky” Ann Metcalf, passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Having a long time family history with Churchill Downs, it was fitting that Gary passed away on Derby Day shortly after the race was finished.
Gary was a son of the late Paul and Peggy Coffey Metcalf, and having been born in Kentucky, his blood ran Blue through and through.
Gary played many years of baseball, basketball, and football in little league and continued playing all throughout his school career. During his senior year at Southern High School in Louisville, KY, Gary was named “Most Athletic” playing baseball, basketball, and football and made All-State in all three sports. Playing Football at Southern High School, Gary was the first person to attempt a field-goal kick and was successful in beating Central High School.
It was also at Southern High where Gary first met the precious love of his life, Becky Ervin.
Gary earned a full scholarship to Kentucky State for Football. After college, Gary and his bride moved to Simpsonville, SC where he worked as a typesetter for both the Greenville News and Hart Graphics which publishes the TV Guide. He was also a part of the Greenville Baseball Card Exchange in the Greenville Mall and operated his own lawnmower repair service shop. His passion for sports was endless and he enjoyed giving back to the community. He coached many little league sports teams and youth football camps as well as JV Girl’s basketball at Hillcrest High School. He was a Cub Scout Leader, a competitive bowler, played intramural softball, and enjoyed the game of golf as his dream home was built near the golf course.
Gary was recognized for his remarkable artistic talent as well. He could draw anything from portraits to yard landscape layouts to blueprints, and in fact, Gary designed the home that he shared with his wife, Becky, and their two children.
Though born a Catholic and attending St. Rita Catholic School in Louisville, Gary converted to the faith of his wife, the Church of Christ. He and their son, Shane, were baptized on the same day in Mauldin Church of Christ.
Gary never met a stranger and thoroughly enjoyed talking to everyone he met. He even learned American Sign Language as a means of communicating among those with hearing loss or deafness and taught ASL to his daughter, Heather, which he used with her in the last days of his life to help communicate.
Along with his wife of 51 years, left to cherish his memory are his son, Shane Metcalf and wife, Amy, of Easley; his daughter, Heather Skelton and husband, Jason, of Pelzer; four grandchildren, Libby Metcalf, Landon Skelton, Mary Lorraine Metcalf, and Emily Skelton; one brother, Barry Metcalf and wife, Heidi; one sister, Laura Metcalf; two nieces, Jessica Wells and Kearce Heidrich; and two nephews, Lee Wells and Luke Metcalf. In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his oldest sister, Karen Aiple.
A visitation will be held Monday, May 15, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Southeast followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
