Gary Wendell Jones, 83, of Greenville, beloved husband of 64 years to Barbara Ann Howell Jones, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.
Born October 27, 1939 in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late William Claud and Helen Osteen Jones.
Wendell, as he was affectionately known, was a member of Unity Baptist Church in Greenville, SC. His faith was a large part of his life, always guiding his actions on a daily basis. Wendell retired from Buchanan Propane Gas Company, Inc. in Travelers Rest, SC. after many years of service and dedication.
Wendell had a wide range of interests that brought him joy. He had a passion for travel, always up to explore new places. Wendell also possessed a unique talent for rebuilding lawn mowers and building go-karts. Wendell’s love for football was evident, as he could often be found cheering for his favorite teams. His adventurous spirit led him to spend countless hours riding in his dune buggy, relishing the thrill of the open road.
Above all, Wendell’s greatest source of happiness was his family, particularly his grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to support them in their endeavors, attending their ballgames, singing competitions, school events, and more. He even went above and beyond by attending a metal rock show to show his unwavering support for his grandson’s musical aspirations. His family held a special place in his heart, and the time spent with them was the most valuable and cherished aspect of his life.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by daughters, Robin Jones Mize (Larry) and Jill Jones Durham of Simpsonville, SC; two grandchildren, Drew Durham and Grace Holtzclaw; two sisters, Donna Jones Skelton (Joe) and Sandra Jones Loftis (Dwight) of Greenville, SC.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Juanita Jones Garrett, Lorene Jones Peterson, and Martha Jones Vermillion; and five brothers, Virgil, Elam, Hoyle, Thomas C, and Curtis.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Northwest, with the funeral service to follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Northwest Chapel with the Reverend Ron Ellison officiating. Burial will be held in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Jones will be Billy Jones, Dennis Jones, Paul Reinerd, Harry McCall, Mike Lewis, and Daniel Headrick. His Adult Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
