George Anthony Francis

April 19, 1918 - August 10, 2004
George Anthony Francis, 86, husband of Louise Dowling Francis, died August 10, 2004 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Salem B. and Nellie Green Francis. A lifetime member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church, he served as an altar boy and in later years, as a Grand Knight of the Monsignor Andrew A.K. Gwynn Council No. 1668, Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion. During WW II he served with the United States Army. He was the owner of George A. Francis Package Store. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Aurelia Ronnie Corbitt, Coral Gables, FL, Camilla Ed Hertwig, of Greenville, Elizabeth Francis of Greenville, Carolyn Dicky Bryant of Darlington, Michael Tracy Francis of Snellville, GA; grandchildren, Jay Leslie Hertwig, David Carrie Hertwig, Greg Hertwig, Laura Bryant, Michael Francis, Camilla Corbitt, and Ashley Francis; great-grandchildren, Jacob Hertwig, Ann Elizabeth Hertwig, and Sarah Madison Hertwig; a brother, Jamile J. Francis and a sister, Louise Howard of Greenville. He was predeceased by a brother, Sam J. Francis. A Vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 Noon Thursday at St. Mary?s Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family is at the residence. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Hospital Foundation, 1 St. Francis Dr., Greenville, SC 29601 or St. Mary?s Catholic Church Building Fund, 111 Hampton Ave., Greenville, SC 29601.
