Halle Cathryn Mikel Ching, 13, of Greenville, South Carolina, was born February 3, 2010 and passed away peacefully, surrounded by her parents, on November 7, 2023.
It’s hard to put into words what Halle meant to her family, friends, and community. She was beloved by many. Born into the world with medical-complexity, Halle far surpassed early estimations of how long she might live. Halle fought seizures, heart and lung problems, and many hospitalizations with a bravery and resilience that seemed otherworldly. And despite having more challenges than most, and more than anyone deserved, her baseline in life was that of peaceful contentment surrounded by people who loved her. As the years went by, it seemed that she had a life mission to spread love and educate others.
There was nothing better in the world than sitting on the couch with Halle and holding her hand; one squeeze from her hand was a life-sustaining experience. For those who had the pleasure of receiving this, we will miss it always. Though Halle could not communicate in the traditional sense, she radiated love, and all who knew her felt it, and felt better in her presence.
Her death, after a short illness, was peaceful and quick. We believe that Halle caught a glimpse of the heavens and decided it was her time to go. For those left behind, the pain is immense. Her brothers say that they feel a piece of the puzzle is missing, and it will feel that way always. Anders and Evan loved Halle more than you can imagine. Halle loved spending time with her family and was a great Atlanta Braves fan (like her fam) and enjoyed Taylor Swift (because her mom wouldn’t have it any other way).
The family is forever grateful to the many teachers, therapists, and caregivers who spent time with Halle and loved her so well.. Also, great appreciation goes to the team of physicians at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in Greenville that took care of Halle for so many years, and the inpatient team that cared for her so well in her final hours.
Halle is survived by her parents, Cathy Stevens, and Erik Ching; her adoring brothers Anders (15) and Evan (9) Ching; her maternal grandparents, Matthew and Carol Stevens (Pops and Mama C); her aunt, Nissa Ching and Jeffrey Tonelis; her uncle and aunt, Rob and Jaime Stevens; and precious first cousins, Parker and Addie Stevens.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Alvin Woodard (Woody) Ching and Harriette Odella Ching.
A service will be held at Furman University’s Daniel Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2023, followed by a reception at Furman’s Younts Conference Center between 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. A private burial will occur on Monday November 13, 2023.
