Harriett Chambers, 71, wife of John E. Chambers, Jr., of Greenville, passed away Thursday, July 8, 2021.

Born in Springfield, SC, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Mattie Ruth Etheredge.

She was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church.

Harriett graduated from Springfield High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Library Science from Columbia College. She was an avid reader and enjoyed being outdoors. Being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother gave her the greatest joy.

In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by a daughter, Natalie Blythe Bialas (Timothy); a son, Nathan Lee Chambers; grandchildren, Emma Margaret Bialas and Scarlett Ruth Chambers; brothers, Muldrow Etheredge (Gina), William Etheredge (Brenda), and Harvey Etheredge (Gayle); and a sister in law, Marilyn Etheredge.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Etheredge.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, from 12:30 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, with the funeral service to follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Downtown Chapel. Burial will be held in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 123 W. Antrim Drive, Greenville SC 29607.

Harriett and I grew up together in Springfield. She was a beautiful, delightful and thoughtful young woman who brought joy to all who knew her. I particularly remember a performance she gave at a musical program at Springfield High School where she performed a song dressed as a "flapper". Not only was she a beautiful "flapper," she was quite a good performer. We both settled in Greenville and when I had the occasion of seeing her, it was a delight. She will be missed.
