Hoke was born the oldest of three brothers in Greenville, SC on June 22, 1931, the son of the late renowned trial lawyer, Hoke Barrymore Black, Sr., and his loving mother, the late Ruth Wells Black.
Hoke spent the entirety of his life in Greenville where he graduated Greenville High School in 1949 and Furman University in 1953. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenville. Hoke was a devout Christian, a loyal brother, and true history buff.
He is survived by his brother, Archibald “Archie” Wells Black and his wife, Carol, of Greenville; niece, Catherine Black Koysza and her husband, David, of Mount Pleasant; great nephew, Archibald Wells Black, III; great nieces, Cely Anne Black, Caroline Frances Koysza, and Sadie Hill Koysza.
Hoke is preceded in death by his brother, William “Bill” Clifton Black and his nephew, Archibald “Wells” Black, Jr.
A private graveside service will be held in Christ Episcopal Churchyard.
