James A. Heffernan – born in South Philadelphia, September 30, 1931, the son of Catharine and James Heffernan – learned early-on the values inherent in a strong Irish-Catholic family: love for his family and friends, devotion to his heritage and commitment to a job well done. On March 3 an article raised doubt about Wilt's 100-point game. That sent me to find online the documentary about the game narrated by Bill Russell. Heff appears, talking about covering the game for The Bulletin, where we were colleagues. All day I was trying to find more info about that game and learned a year ago we lost Heff, his smile and gentleness. R.I.P.

Dear Shauna and Shelly, What a beautiful tribute to a great man. Your father was a class act, generous, humble, calm beyond words, and someone we could all look up to and learn from. One quick story. I first met your Dad at the 1979 Super Bowl in Miami, where he secured for us VIP credentials to every pregame, postgame, and game day event for the entire weekend. Jimmy was of course working the game, so we all shared his room, which was adjoining your parents. When questioned (frequently) by staff about who were and what we were doing, we proudly told people we were with “Mr. Heff”, and the seas would part and doors would be held open, yielding us unlimited access. We had field passes for the game, and ended up in the winning Pittsburgh Steeler locker room celebration. There were many Super Bowls after that one, and far too many stories to retell. No doubt your father , Mrs. Heff and Jimmy are all together again, retelling these stories, looking down at the wonderful legacy they have created. God bless you and your family.

I had the pleasure of getting to know "Heff" through the Men of Espiritu Santo. A wonderful, kind man who was truly a man of the Holy Spirit. God Bless Heff and his family and loved ones.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

James was so fortunate to have the loving care of family especially from Jeff and Shelly as he transitioned from independent to skilled nursing care in Greenville. They made sure he was comfortable and had the best care every day...

A man can be great or not. A man can live a great life or not. Few men can be both great and live a great life. Jim was one of these few men - and he did it with a smile. We will miss you, Jim. Love - Dave and Edra Dezen
