Jean Esther Langley Wilkes, age 83, of McDonough, GA, passed away on June 16, 2022 at her daughter’s residence in Franklin, GA.
Ms. Wilkes was born September 24, 1938 in Greenville, SC to the late William Louie and Ruby Smith Langley. Ms. Wilkes was of the Methodist faith and studied her Bible faithfully.
Ms. Wilkes graduated in 1956 from Paris High School Greenville, SC where she excelled in basketball later entering college with a basketball scholarship. Ms. Wilkes excelled in all she pursued to include cooking for her family. Ms. Wilkes was known for her pound cakes enjoyed by her family and friends.
She was a graduate of Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing in 1959 and remained passionate about nursing for 63 years. Ms. Wilkes maintained an active nursing license through the age of 83. Ms. Wilkes’ nursing career allowed her to touch the lives of many individuals with her nurturing, selfless, gentle, and compassionate personality. Nursing was truly the calling that God planned for her life. Ms. Wilkes retired from Southern Regional Medical Center Riverdale, GA after many years of nursing to care for her mother in her final years.
Ms. Wilkes is survived by her daughter, Katherine Wilkes Bennett of Franklin, GA; Herb Wilkes of Griffin, GA; one brother, brother Bill Langley (Julie) of Florida; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Anita Louise Langley.
A graveside service for Ms. Wilkes will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville, SC. Ms. Wilkes grandson, Jason Chambers, will officiate the graveside service.
