Joseph Scott Porter, 64, of Taylors, husband of 45 years to Heidi Tyus Porter, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 6, 2021.
Born in Asheville, NC, he was a son of Betty Blevins Porter of Simpsonville and the late Jack R. Porter.
Joe was a leader of the Christian faith. He graduated from Erskine College and was employed at Kemet Electronics for 32 years. He was the owner and editor of Wreck Diving Magazine that took him on expeditions to the Titanic, the Britannic, and diving on Spanish galleons. Joe was a volunteer at the Greenville County Detention Center for five years before assuming the role as Chaplain, leading many people to Christ. He was a Gideon for 25 years.
In addition to his wife and mother, Joe is survived by three sons, Jacob Porter (Kayla), Philip Porter and his son, Drake, and Joseph “Chug” Porter (Erica); brother, Steve Porter (Tammy); mother-in-law, Laura Tyus; brother-in-law, Marion Tyus (Vickie); numerous nieces and nephews; and a number of four-legged grandfurbabies.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by sister-in-law, Teresa Tyus Lemoine; and brother-in-law, Marvin Tyus.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 17, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. The funeral will be on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 1:30 PM at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
