Joseph Scott Porter, 64, of Taylors, husband of 45 years to Heidi Tyus Porter, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 6, 2021.

Born in Asheville, NC, he was a son of Betty Blevins Porter of Simpsonville and the late Jack R. Porter.

Joe was a leader of the Christian faith. He graduated from Erskine College and was employed at Kemet Electronics for 32 years. He was the owner and editor of Wreck Diving Magazine that took him on expeditions to the Titanic, the Britannic, and diving on Spanish galleons. Joe was a volunteer at the Greenville County Detention Center for five years before assuming the role as Chaplain, leading many people to Christ. He was a Gideon for 25 years.

In addition to his wife and mother, Joe is survived by three sons, Jacob Porter (Kayla), Philip Porter and his son, Drake, and Joseph “Chug” Porter (Erica); brother, Steve Porter (Tammy); mother-in-law, Laura Tyus; brother-in-law, Marion Tyus (Vickie); numerous nieces and nephews; and a number of four-legged grandfurbabies.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by sister-in-law, Teresa Tyus Lemoine; and brother-in-law, Marvin Tyus.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 17, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. The funeral will be on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 1:30 PM at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Family and friends who are unable to attend the service can view the Live Stream by clicking on the “Watch Livestream” button located on the main obituary page.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Gideons International, PO Box 1941, Taylors, SC 29687.

Heidi and the Porter family ::I am so sorry for the loss of brother Joe he was an awesome brother in Christ we spent many hours of talking about things that pertain to the kingdom of God :: Joe loved the Lord and he certainly loved the family :::the two biggest loves of his life :::the Lord and the family. Heidi and sons, Please know Ken and I are there with you in spirit. I mailed a memorial piece of glass yesterday. We still can’t believe Joe is gone. Great sadness here in the north. I wonder if Joe is catching the Braves games. I hear they r doing okay and I remember him enjoying their games

Betty, We are keeping you all in our prayers as you walk through these many difficult days. Our family remembers how you have agonized these past weeks because you could not even be at Joe's side. BUT, now you have the "Peace that passes understanding"because of God's Love, Grace and Mercy. Heidi - We was shocked to hear of Joe's passing. I had no idea he was involved in so many ministries for God. How happy he is now that he is in the presence of the one he loved and the one he served and continues to serve, even today. My heartfelt condolences to you Heidi and your family. Joe was a good friend and had a tremendous heart for ministry. Words escape me to express our loss of a warrior for the Gospel. There will never be another Joe. I loved him and although it is heavens gain it is our loss. There are some things that never enter our understanding and this is one. An old pastor told me if we pick flowers in a field we always choose the prettiest. That is exactly what God did.

Got to share some time Joe, and go diving with him at the "mine", He was such a good person. Condolences to Heidi and family. Sending prayers.

Thankful for having had the blessing of knowing and serving at GCDC! He was a biblical and spiritual mentor and am so very thankful for his example and leadership! Praying for God's peace, love, and Presence for Heidi and the Porter family in this time of loss.

Joe was one of my students in the Correctional Chaplaincy Certificate program. He was a wonderful student and respected by his classmates. Joe pursued excellence and you can hear the love he had for those he served in the jail. Joe is dearly missed. We are praying for comfort and healing for his family and for Chaplain McMinn. My heartfelt condolences to Joe's mother, Betty, his wife, sons and remainder of his family. I grew acquainted with Joe through his mom, a wonderful Christian woman and my cousin by marriage. While there is assurance for his immediate family that Joe is rejoicing in Heaven, I pray for peace and comfort in the loss of one so dear.

I knew Joe for many, many years during his time at Kemet. I worked for a big company that was a customer of Kemet. Joe was the most honest, reliable, and trustworthy business associate I ever knew. Beyond our business relationship, Joe was a true friend. He was an exceptional man. God bless him in Heaven.

Joe was a good man. He was caring and dependable as a husband, father, son, grandfather, uncle, friend, and co-worker. He truly loved people and wanted to make a difference. He was a shining beacon of God’s love as a light in the community and sharing the good news of Jesus faithfully at the Detention Center. He was the epitome of what a man should be. I worked for Joe for a few years at Kemet and he was the best of men. He had a very kind, Christian heart and is receiving his rewards in Heaven now. God Bless and Keep you, you will be missed.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I knew Joe from the Detention Center and would often meet him coming out of Bible studies on Sunday night. He always had a smile and a friendly greeting. I will dearly miss him but know I shall see him again, because as long as our Redeemer lives, so shall we. I am praying for God's peace and comfort for your family.

Joe is a great man of God. I enjoyed getting to know him through the jail ministry. In this last season I had the privilege to eat a few meals with him and got to know him much better. If it is possible I hope the Lord allows me to be more and more like Joe because Joe was definitely a lot like Jesus. My most heartfelt condolences to you all. As great of a man as he is I’m sure you all are terribly torn at his passing. But rest assured we will all see him one day.
