Joseph Smith Whisonant, Jr., 60, of Greenville, died Thursday, June 3, 2021.
Born in Gaffney, SC, he was the son of the late Joseph Whisonant and Sylvia Haile Whisonant Yellen.
Mr. Whisonant grew up in Greenville, SC and graduated from J.L. Mann High School. In 1979, he represented J.L. Mann High School in that year’s Shrine Bowl. He went on to play collegiate football on a scholarship to Appalachian State University. He graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Textile Technology from the Institute of Textile Technology in 1990. His career spanned internationally for 38 years in manufacturing quality control. As a man of faith, he was a member of Christ Covenant Church, in Charlotte, NC for 22 years. He was a passionate outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. In his free time, he also enjoyed coaching high school football and Pop Warner. He was very involved with his community and was an active board member for the Cancer Survivors Park Alliance, based out of Greenville, SC. He was also a youth mentor for the Upstate South Carolina Mentor Program.
He is survived by his daughter, Caroline Whisonant Gunning and her husband, Joseph Gunning; son Joseph Whisonant III; brother John W. Whisonant; sister Mary Mills; niece Elizabeth Mills; nephew Robert Mills; nephew John C. Whisonant.
There will be a private graveside service for family in Oakland Cemetery, in Gaffney, SC.
