Joyce W. Burch, affectionately named “Daisy”, passed away on February 8, 2024, at the age of 89. Born on April 11, 1934, in Hiawassee, GA, she was the daughter of the late Wayne and Maude Reed Burch. For the past few years, she lived with her daughter in Travelers Rest, SC, where she found care and comfort as she endured dementia which took away her hard-earned independence.
Daisy had a rare strength and courage that enabled her to take some of life’s hardest blows. Many times life knocked her down but she never failed to pick herself up and carry on. She was a hardworking and proudly independent individual, having earned an Associate’s Degree from Greenville Technical College before continuing on to Furman University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree. Graduating from Furman was an especially proud moment for her because she accomplished all of this 35 years after graduating high school and while continuing to work. Following graduation, she continued as an Administrative Assistant for Abbott Enterprises, eventually devoting over 20 years of service before retiring well into her 70’s.
Outside of her profession, she appreciated the simple pleasures of life. She loved to read and enjoyed trips to the mountains or the beach. In mid-December she loved to ride around and look at “the beautiful Christmas lights”. Most of all she cherished time with her family, no matter what they were doing. Her genuine affection and love for her family was so strong it was palpable.
Raising her daughter, Wanda Keeter (Bill), and son, Mike Towery (Debbie), on her own made them the center of her world. She found immense happiness in their happiness and felt their pain as her own. She was always careful to point out that raising two children “on her own” included help from her loving family.
Daisy’s legacy of family devotion will continue to live on through her beloved brother, Johnny Burch (Linda), and throughout her extended family. She was blessed with five grandchildren, Donnie Banks (Amy), Mikala Padget, Lauren Harrelson (Jeremy), Mandy Pierce-Neal (Billy), and Erica Noyes (Jack); as well as the joy of nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews.
Daisy is now celebrating in heaven, surrounded by her parents and siblings, Lois Cathey, Reba Walker, and J.C. Burch, who made the journey before her.
A visitation will be held Thursday, February 15, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Northwest. The funeral service will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Northwest Chapel, with burial to follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Daisy will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and cherished memories.
