Julian William Dority, husband of Jean Dority, of Greenville, SC, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023.
Julian was born in Charleston, SC to the late Carroll Brunson and Agnes West Dority. Julian resided in Charleston during his childhood and teenage years. He attended Clemson University and then transferred to the University of South Carolina, where he graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering. It was during his time at USC that he met his future wife, Jean.
Following Graduation from USC, Julian and Jean moved to Washington, DC, where he studied chemistry at George Washington University while working at the U.S. Patent Office. After three years as a Patent Examiner, he went to work at the Army Missile Patent Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
In 1962, Julian decided to go to the University of South Carolina School of Law so that he could not only write patent applications but also litigate patent disputes. After obtaining his law degree, he joined the Ralph Bailey law firm in 1965 and moved to Greenville, SC.
In 1985, Julian and Mackie Manning formed the law firm Dority & Manning. This firm is now one of the largest Intellectual Property law firms in the South with clients throughout the world.
During his life, Julian enjoyed growing roses and donated numerous dozens of his roses to the annual Rose Ball. He also enjoyed gardening, camping, and fishing with his children and grandchildren.
Julian was very involved in Christ Church Episcopal, where he served on the Vestry and many other church committees.
Julian is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jean Eidson Dority of Greenville; three wonderful children, Peter Dority (Lynn) of Simpsonville, SC, Lucie Dority Snyder of Simpsonville, SC, and Roland Dority (Catherine) of Charleston, SC; seven precious grandchildren, Rachel Reeder (Wayne), William Dority (Ashley), Andrew Snyder (Alexis), James Dority (Gaby), Preston Snyder, Benjamin Dority, and Simmons Dority; two adoring great grandchildren, Elizabeth Jean Reeder, and Lucas Samuel Reeder; and his siblings, Edith Lucas of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Carroll Dority (Marybeth) of Alexandria, VA, and Thomas Dority (Sue) of Charleston, SC.
In addition to his parents, Julian was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Dority.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary at Christ Church Episcopal with a reception to follow in McCall Parlor.
