Kay and Heiko were speakers for Westminster PCA Missions Conference in 2017. They opened the hearts and eyes of our church about the phenomenon of migrants leaving the 10-40 window. What excitement and enlightenment for us. I know we shall meet at the throne of grace. Heiko, we send our belated love and condolences.

How I cherished the times I spent with Kay in Berlin. Her sweet friendship was such a bright spot during that decade of my life. She made me the first cup of coffee I ever I enjoyed and turned me into a coffee drinker. I still think of her often as I froth milk for my morning brew. I will never forget when Kay came to the airport to say goodbye as we headed back to the USA. Noticing that I had forgotten to wear earrings, she said that just wouldn’t do. She took off her lovely pair and insisted that I wear them for our trip home. She was truly one of the sweetest, most generous people I’ve ever known. Heiko, please know that Kip and I are holding you and your dear family close in our thoughts and prayers.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

How the heavens are rejoicing in Kay's homecoming! She fought the good fight without one bullet. Her demeanor was so peaceful and Christ-like. She reminds me so much of her mom, Adele. Many years ago I was able to assist in babysitting with Natalie Donner, and have many wonderful memories of the family and the mink farm. We will continue in prayer for the family.

I have known Kay since she was an infant. Her mom and I raised our children in the same years in the small town of Lakeville,MA. Following her school years with all her accomplishments was inspiring. Our church was happy to share in her life mission of serving others. No one was more pleased and proud than her mom and dad. We were all sad to hear of her health struggles and know she is with her loving parents and safe in the arms of Jesus. Peace and comfort for those of her family and many friends.

Wir sind dankbar, dass wir sie kennen durften. In Liebe Claus, Susanne & Laura

Stan and I (and our extended family spread across the country) have known Kay for decades. We were aunt and uncle on her mom’s side. We cherish all our memories of Kay. A funny story comes to mind when she was about two years old and visiting her grandparents in Wheaton. She loved carrying a cat named Ralph around, draped over her arm like a purse. The poor cat tolerated this but we could tell from its pulled-back ears that he could hardly wait until she went back home! Growing up a bit, she was the flower girl at our wedding. Kay spent time with us in California during her travels around the world after she graduated from college. We were hosted by her and Heiko in Berlin, and then there were the Nystrom/Nanfelt/Beachy family reunions over the years. She was a special and gifted niece. So while our hearts are heavy to learn of her loss to all the family and friends she had, we can know that she is in the presence of the King she loved and served so well - and joyful to be reunited with others she loved who went before. For now, our hearts and prayers are with all our family who will miss her so much.

Kay Burklin was a volunteer for us here at World Relief. I was blessed to be able to work with her in welcoming one of our Afghan families. She took the command "Love God and Love Neighbor" seriously and I am very thankful for all she did as a volunteer, but more importantly, who she was. Will be praying for the whole Burklin family.

I was privileged to meet Kay at an MTW ladies luncheon in 2012. We were fast friends when she asked me to teach her oil painting. We’d put together a charcuterie board of goodies and paint late into the night. We laughed how Kay always seemed to manage getting paint on her face and shirt. In no time, she became a confident and proficient abstract and realistic painter. A few months ago she texted that she is looking forward to "not having to clean those brushes in Heaven!" Staying up late we would share our lives, mission plans, and creative endeavors. Jim and I joined Kay on a mission trip to Berlin where we taught art to refugees. On another trip we served refugees and taught art therapy in Athens, Greece. During Covid, we taught art classes to refugees right here in Georgia. Kay prioritized the perils and plight of refugees around the world. She never hesitated to share her precious time to serve - even after her diagnosis. I will miss her as my confidant, fashion consultant, book recommender, prayer partner, and muse. She adored Heiko and once said, "No one doesn't like Heiko!" Kay changed my life. She made me want to laugh more, celebrate each precious moment we are on this earth, and pursue a higher level of creativity. I am beyond grateful that God brought Kay into my life and I am already looking forward to seeing her smile and bright blue eyes in heaven wearing a painting apron, standing in front of her easel, pink colors on her palette, and yes, paint on her face.

I had the great privilege of learning to play the flute, starting in 4th grade, with the very talented Kay as my teacher. This was many, many years ago, when Heiko & her boys’ were running around in diapers :). She was patient, loving, kind, lovely, and beautiful in every sense of the word. She was such a bright light and will be greatly missed. Heaven sure gained a special angel. My prayers go Up for Heiko, Stephan, Yannick and Micah, as well as for everyone who was blessed to know and love Kay. May God wrap you in His arms with peace and love, knowing she is Up There healthy and playing beautiful music on the piano and flute for her Savior. Love you Burklins ?

Mrs.Burklin was one of the nicest people I've ever met. She is a great mother to one of my best friends. I know without a doubt that she instilled all of her values into that great young man. My favourite memory of her is Mrs.Burklin trying to teach me German and making some awesome home-cooked meals when I went over. I hope that the Burklins know that all the Bonanis are keeping them in their prayers.

I first met Kay at MTW Disaster Response Training, and then a few years later, I accompanied her in 2016 on one of the first relief teams to Athens to support the refugees. She shined with God's love everywhere she went and embodied compassion, joy, and hope to all. She was an inspiration to everyone who met her - certainly to me! She will be missed, but I look forward to seeing her beautiful smile again one day.

Dear Heiko and family, My favorite memory of Kay is a funny one that still makes me laugh to this day. Marjean Ingram, Lynn Mann, myself & Kay did a singing spoof, in love of course, for Milford Meyer. (David Freeland filmed the spoof and was instrumental in the creation of our “group”) My character was Mildew Quagmire and I sang A Mighty Fortress with Marjean & Lynn as my backup singers. Kay played the piano and was amazing at intentionally hitting wrong notes during the “performance”. At the end Kay could not hold her laughter in any longer but managed to keep playing and she bent down in hysterics while never missing a fractured note. She was an amazing light and I’m sure the angels are singing right now while she plays magnificently in heaven enjoying God’s abundant Love for her. My deepest sympathy and prayers to you, Heiko, and your family. Love you, Deeley

I met Kay during her years at Wheaton College through a cousin. What fun we had together. Her family kindly invited me to come visit with them in MA for a week and what an amazing trip that was. Kay and family took me to Boston, Cape Cod, Plymouth Rock. The memories are still clear in my mind. As others have already expressed, Kay's cheerful, loving heart, her love for the Lord, and desire to reflect Christ in all she did was so very evident. Heicko, unfortunately I never had the opportunity to get to know you or your children other than through Christmas cards but I know Kay was crazy about you all! Please accept my condolences. May you know the Peace of Christ in your hearts in great measure as you walk through the days ahead. In His Grip, Sutherland
