LCDR Charles Talmadge Settlemyer III

December 13, 1933 - March 25, 2010
Charles Talmadge Settlemyer III, of Simpsonville passed away on March 25, 2010 at his home in the loving company of his wife, sons, and family. Born in Gastonia, NC in 1933 he was the son of the late Charles and Irma Settlemyer of Greenville South Carolina. Lieutenant Commander Settlemyer USN RETIRED enjoyed a career in the Navy that spanned 30 years. Entering the Navy as an enlisted seaman during the Korean conflict Charles rose to the rate of Boatswain's mate First Class. Upon the completion of his enlistment, he returned to Greenville to attend college at Furman University. Upon his graduation in 1960, he was selected to attend Officer's Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island and received his commission as an Ensign in the Navy. After a wide and varied career that included a tour in Korea and 2 tours in Vietnam, Charles retired from the Navy in 1982. Since then, Mr. Settlemyer held a variety of volunteer positions to include President of the local Retired Officer's Association TROA and South Carolina State President of the Military Officer's Association MOAA and enjoyed extensive travel with his wife and family. Charles is survived by his devoted wife and best friend of 51 years Mary Ellen, his sons Charles T. Settlemyer, IV and wife Yvette of Orange Park, Fla; CDR Sidney R. Settlemyer USN Ret and wife Carla of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Kenneth Jackson Settlemyer and wife Sara of Duncan, SC; Plus 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Charles was a member of First Baptist Church of Simpsonville. The family wishes to thank the Cancer Center of the Carolinas and the Heartland Hospice organization for their care and support over the past several months. The family will receive friends at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, in Greenville, on Sunday, March 28, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held Monday, March 29, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in the downtown chapel. Lieutenant Commander Settlemyer USN Ret will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery on July 21, 2010 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice, 421 S.E. Main Street, Simpsonville, SC 29681, 864-963-0045 and/or Simpsonville First Baptist Church, 3 Hedge Street Simpsonville, SC 29681-2637, 864 967-8591.
