Marjorie Elizabeth Montgomery, know by all as Margie, was a loving and devoted grandmother, mother and wife. She passed away peacefully surrounded by beloved family and friends on July 30th, 2023.
Born in Chesterfield, SC, Margie was the daughter of the late George Preston and Ruth Holley Davidson. She was raised in Charleston, SC and graduated in 1956 from Chicora High School. She met and married the love of her life, Jerald D. Montgomery, while he was stationed there and serving in the U.S. Navy. They later moved to Greenville, SC where they established their home and raised two children. Margie and Jerry then fulfilled their dream of renovating a Victorian home together where they enjoyed hosting family and friends for many years.
Margie was a person of many beautiful talents. She was an accomplished artist, seamstress, and gardener, but most importantly, an incredible Grandmother who loved her family with all of her heart. Her love of travel and adventure took her to many parts of the world. Margie’s infectious laugh and zest for life brought joy to everyone around her.
She was a faithful member of Augusta Heights Baptist Church where she served in numerous roles and ministries. Among those were being a Flower Committee member, Meals on Wheels Coordinator, and the church’s “go to” volunteer. She loved children and her favorite role was leading the Children’s Sunday School program for over 10 years. Through these ministries, Margie shared her deep faith and love of God with all she met.
Margie is survived by her loving children, Sherri Montgomery Howie (Theodore V. Howie, Jr. “Vic”) and George Bryan Montgomery (Lieschen Anne Montgomery); and her much adored grandchildren, Theodore Victor (Trey) Howie, III, Caroline Elizabeth Howie, Thomas Jerald Montgomery, and Lily Anne Montgomery. She is also survived by her devoted long term companion, Fred Clark.
In addition to her parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Jerald D. Montgomery, and her sister, Billy Crenshaw.
The family would like to offer sincere gratitude to the caregivers, nurses and staff of the Woodlands at Furman where she resided the last few years of her life. Special thanks to Teresa Harvey, her long term care giver, who became part of her extended family.
A private graveside service will be held in Woodlawn Memorial Park on Thursday, August 3, 2023.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to August Heights Baptist Church, 3018 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC, 29605.
