Mary Jane Steele, of Greenville, wife of the late Jerry Thomas Steele, who passed away on December 23, 2009, passed away on January 11,2021.

A native of Belmont, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late James Harvey and Alpha Harmon Dickson. She was a graduate of Belmont High School and of Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC, where she earned a B.S. Degree in Piano. Prior to her marriage she was on the piano and organ faculty at Lander College in Greenwood, SC.

Mary Jane was an active member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church and served on many committees and as substitute organist. She was a Past President and active member of the Crescent Music Club for over fifty years. She taught piano privately for many years and served area churches as a substitute organist. Her leisure time was spent becoming a Master Gardener and digging in the dirt.

Mary Jane is survived by three children; Timothy Dickson Steele and wife Rena, Daniel Thomas Steele and wife Betsy, and Susan Elizabeth Steele Rodewoldt and husband Fred. Six grandchildren, Megan Steele Martin (Chris), Colin Alexander Steele, April Kelly Steele, James Thomas Steele, Emily Taylor Steele, and Frederick Willy Rodewoldt IV.

The memorial service for Mary Jane Steele has been rescheduled for Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 1:30pm at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, 200 Buncombe Street, Greenville, SC 29601. The Family will receive friends immediately following the service at the Poinsett Club, 807 E. Washington Street, Greenville, SC 29601. Guests attending in person must register at https://www.buncombestreetumc.org/funerals/ and are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing. The service will be live streamed at buncombestreetumc.org.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crescent Music Club Scholarship Fund, 17 La Vista Court, Greenville, SC,29601.

What a wonderful and classy lady. Enjoyed being neighbors and walks together. Simply a joy to know. So sadden.

Mary Jane had so many good qualities that it is hard to choose the best - she had a zest for life that defied the situation in which she found herself last October. She was determined to live life to its fullest until that final day and I hope she was able to do just that. I think that I admire her philosophy more than anything else. May she receive her just reward - which will be something great.

So many great memories of Mary Jane- Buncombe Street church from basketball, handbells, choir and Sunday School. Mary Jane always had a smile and positive thing to say.

Mrs. Steele could light up a room with her smile and loving nature, and meant so much to her family, many friends, church and community. I pray for God’s comfort and grace for her family. She lives on in Heaven and in our hearts.

I walked to take piano at Mrs. Steele’s house every week for my entire childhood. I wasn’t a great piano player by any means, and would have stopped taking lessons long before I did if I didn’t love her so much. She was so good to me, so positive, joyful and upbeat. Sometimes I would just ask her to play for me. She was extremely talented. What a great lady.

Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

Mary Jane was a lovely, gentle, and kind lady. I loved everything about her and will miss her beautiful smile. I hold her family close in my heart and pray for God’s loving comfort. Deborah Freeman

I knew Mary Jane and her husband as a youth growing up in Buncombe St. UMC. She and her husband taught Sunday School and were wonderful teachers. Mary Jane had such a special gift with children and she was choir director when I was a child.

I've worked with Mary Jane for over 50 years in Crescent Music Club. What a wonderful colleague. I will miss her so very much; we shared many happy times in Past Presidents gatherings. Prayers and love go with you. Margaret Ulmer

Our prayers and thoughts are with all of you. Mary Jane touched our lives with her gift of music. She was part of our life with all our children as we watched them grow up in church. Then in more recent years, I was blessed to be with her on BSUMC trips and we took bible studies etc.
