Mary Margaret “Marti” Simmons Cash was born in Greenville, SC, on October 5, 1953, to Charles Bedford Simmons and Margaret Mason Simmons. She has a younger brother, Chuck Simmons. Chuck and his wife Beth were cherished by her.
Marti lived her life wholeheartedly and faithfully serving God, church, friends, and family. She loved everyone, and everyone who was fortunate enough to know her loved her. Her children’s friends considered her a second mama. Marti’s smile was beautiful and
contagious, and she smiled a lot.
Marti was in the first class to graduate from Eastside High School. She earned a BA degree in nursing from Clemson University and began her nursing career at Grenville General Hospital. She continued nursing at Greenville Memorial Hospital and at private
practice doctors’ offices before retiring from nursing to teach at St. Giles Presbyterian Preschool. “Miss Marti” loved all the children there, and was loved by the children and their parents. Her generous heart was always shining through her work.
Marti married Joe Cash, Jr., in 1980. Marti and Joe have two children, Lauren and Joe III, of whom they’re both very proud. Lauren is married to Nate Cox, and they have two daughters; Lachlyn Alexandra Cox and Margaret Mason “Macie” Cox. Joe III is married to
Jocelyn Mak Cash, and they have one son, Thornton Bedford “Thor” Cash. Marti’s precious children and grandchildren, who knew her as “Gaga,” were the joy of her life.
She remained close to lifelong friends Sandy and Bill Cary and Marsha Johnson. Marti also had a close-knit group of friends from church and a great gang of friends with whom she and Joe celebrated birthdays and any occasion to get together.
Marti was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and went to be with our Lord barely more than a month later on August 6, 2022. She will be deeply and profoundly missed by everyone. She left this world a much better place because of her presence.
In lieu of flowers, Marti requested donations be made to St. Giles Presbyterian Preschool and Triune Mercy Center.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 10, 2022, 4:30 p.m., at Triune Mercy Center, 222 Rutherford St., Greenville, SC 29609. Visitation will be held at Triune from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
