Mary “Willis” Sherer

Mary Elizabeth Willis Sherer, 88, wife of David Grier Sherer, died Saturday, May 8, 2021.

Born in Augusta, GA, she was the daughter of the late Jeff Robert and Elizabeth Pittman Willis, Sr.

Mary was a 1950 graduate of Greenville High School and a 1954 graduate of Furman University. She retired from the Greenville County School System after many years of teaching at Mitchell Road Elementary. She was a faithful member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, Greenville. She cherished the Tommy Thomason Sunday School Class and served on several church committees. She received great joy delivering Meals on Wheels with her husband, David. In her spare time Mary was a Master Gardner. However, her greatest joy was time spent with grandchildren, family, and friends.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Iva Boerma and husband, Richard, and Margaret Jones and husband, Wendell; four grandsons, Dr. David Boerma and wife, Jessica, 1st. Lt. Ben Boerma and wife, Grace, Palmer Jones, and 2nd Lt. William Jones; granddaughter, Caroline Toniolo and husband, Steve; great- granddaughter Grier Toniolo; and two beloved cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Jeff Willis, Jr.

A visitation will be held Friday, May 14, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church in Greenville, SC, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in the Sharon ARP Church Cemetery in Sharon, SC.
