Peggy Carlene (Blackmon) McCall, 75, died June 23, 2022, at Waterstone on Augusta, under the care of Hospice of the Upstate, ten years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
She is survived by her daughter, Gretta (Richard Lynch) McCall; son, Blake (Angela) McCall; grandchildren, Claira McCall-Lynch and Daniel McCall; sister, Judy Blackmon Robinson; brother, Doug (Debbie) Blackmon; and sister-in-law, Betty Louise Glass. Carlene is predeceased by a sister, Mary Ellen Hendrix and her beloved husband, Andrew Joseph McCall.
Carlene was born March 12, 1947 in Lancaster, SC to the late Peggy Lucille (Gardner) Blackmon and William Carl Blackmon. After Carl died in 1948, her mother married John Cambell (JC) Bennett who died in 1956. Carlene graduated from Lancaster Senior High School in 1965.
In 1970 Carlene met her husband, Joe McCall, in Columbia, SC. Joe and Carlene enjoyed a deeply fulfilling marriage of 50 years. Carlene and Joe raised their children in Seneca, SC. In 2006, they moved to West Union, SC.
Carlene was a dedicated mother and homemaker. Her legacy to her children is one of love, knowledge of the Christian faith, a passion for wellness, and a sense of empowerment that does not hinge on plenitude or poverty. She joyfully ran the home enabling Joe to build his business as an accountant. Later, Carlene worked in the family business with her husband and son.
Carlene might best be described through the words of Melanie McGee Bianchi, a dear friend of Carlene’s daughter. “I absolutely adore and admire your mother. Her love for her children just radiated out of her like the sun. Remember when she made us ‘dough snakes?’ I can still see her radiating with light, just doing everyday things!”
Carlene McCall devoted her life to God. She wrote, meditated, prayed and studied God’s word daily and taught Sunday school and Bible study. Carlene’s wisdom was rooted in love and was a benefit to all who knew her. She was filled with unwavering and unconditional compassion and empathy. Carlene’s strong and brilliant light, her vibrant spirit and unique personality, and her core values of love, compassion, joy and family remained with her until the end of her life.
