My wife Aimee and I only met Renato one time during a tour of the distillery. We must have talked about him most of the rest of that evening and the days following because we were so impressed with his immense knowledge and obvious passion for the the art of distilling, Very rarely do you meet someone so well traveled and truly following their heart and life’s passion. He was a treasure of a man and our hearts go out to his family during this time.

Jim & Mary Hayes left a message on December 11, 2023:
Shortly after meeting Renato for the first time, we took a trip to Italy in 2010. My wife, Mary, and I stayed at Villa Sant’Andrea, the home of Renato and Jan in Cortona, Tuscany. For over a week we were guests at this beautiful venue. We were fortunate that our trip coincided with Renato and Jan’s being there. Though unplanned, Renato turned out to be our de facto tour guide. What a rich experience to visit parts of Piemonte, Lombardia and Toscana with a consummate native Italian expert on all things Italian! We visited restaurants, wineries and other places that we would never have known about without the benefit of Renato’s vast knowledge. One of our favorite memories from this trip was that of sharing late night grappa with Renato at Villa Sant’Andrea. During the course of the week that we were there, it became somewhat of a ritual. After everyone else had retired, Renato and I would sample from his impressive collection of grappa until the wee hours as he shared esoteric stories about gastronomical subjects, the technical and sensory aspects of liqueurs and numerous other fascinating topics. It was then that I began to appreciate the depth of his knowledge on so many subjects. Like so many others, we will miss Renato tremendously. He exemplified a good and noble life. He positively influenced the lives of those around him. He made the world a better place because of his friendships, his contributions to improving life, his generosity in sharing his knowledge, his love for mankind, his wise and all-encompassing view of the world and, indeed, by his very presence and personality. - Jim and Mary Hayes
