The Reverend George Thomas Madden, 89, of Greer, beloved husband of Etta Turner Madden, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour, Monday, August 8, 2022.

Born in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late H.A. and Hattie Welborn Madden.

Reverend Madden was a retired Church Of God Minister and a member of Praise Cathedral Church of God in Greer, SC, and a part time associate of Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes. Reverend Madden was a graduate of Welcome High School. After graduating high school, he continued his education, attending Clemson University, and earned degrees from Lee College and the Church of God Pentecostal Theological Seminary.

During his years in ministry, he served the Lord pastoring several area churches including, Travelers Rest Church of God, Bennestville Church of God, Gap Hill Church of God, Woodside Church of God and Elmwood Avenue Church of God. Reverend Madden also served on the South Carolina State Youth Board and South Carolina Church of God State Council. He was the South Carolina Church of God Evangelism Director, and Superintendent for the South Carolina Church of God Home for Children.

Reverend Madden had a passion and heart for ministry, he loved his Lord, his church and his family. He lived the life he preached on a daily basis. Reverend Madden had a servants heart and Christlike spirit that radiated the love of the Lord. His presence will be missed but his legacy of love and ministry will continue on through his loved ones.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by sons, Reverend Thomas “Tom” A. Madden (Charla) and Reverend Jerry D. Madden (Jan); four grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Miriam Madden; and two brothers, Elmer Madden and Curtis Madden.

A visitation will be held Thursday, August 11, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Praise Cathedral Church of God, Greer SC. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 12, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Praise Cathedral Church of God, Greer, SC. A private burial will be held.

I am deeply sorry for your loss but so happy Brother Madden is rejoicing with The Lord. All my life I grew up knowing what a special man of God he was. My prayers are with Sister Madden and his family.

Etta & family, our ❤️? are with all of you in the loss of Brother Madden. It has been So many years bc Carl has been gone 21 years. Unbelievable. But I remember those times in SC & Carl being on the State Music Committee and your beautiful piano playing & the fun at Youth Camp that Carl never forgot when you guys did "Elvira"! Brother Thomas always such a blessing and the two pf you a lovely couple. My heart aches for your loss, BUT as the Apostle Paul said, " We are not without HOPE! " You shall see him again on that Great Reunion Day!

Our deepest and most heart felt sympathy for the Madden family. Pastor Madden always had such a happy and sweet spirit - always a smile on his face - He will be missed!

We offer the Lord praise and thanksgiving for a man who served his God with intention, whole-heartedness, and passion! We offer prayers of comfort, strength, and peace to Etta, Tom, Jerry and all the family. Wanda and I were privileged to serve under the Maddens’ as Minister of Music at Gap Hill in the early 80’s. We were young and inexperienced but excited for this new work in the kingdom. Under their tutelage, we were trained, ministered to, and set on a track that would pay dividends for our family in years to come. No one realized just how great the expanse would become in God’s kingdom. Thomas, the teacher, had many tools in his chest. One of the most useful was sandpaper. Metaphorically, when one of the staff or members created a “splinter” or a “burr,” he knew how to choose the sandpaper with an appropriate grit to take care of the burr. He would not leave the task without picking up another piece of sandpaper with a finer grit to smooth the area, making it only slightly visible. Thomas did not stop there. He would take the finest grit of sandpaper – one only used to polish – to enhance – and would gently work until no evidence of a burr even existed, and the church was shaped into something beautiful! We are all evidence of his handiwork. Thomas, following the guidance of the Lord, was able to train many for kingdom work. Not only was he successful as a pastor, he was influential in leading the Home for Children in SC. He touched many lives throughout the years. We are better people because of Thomas and Etta Madden. Heaven is rich with his presence and rest assured Thomas that “Until then,--when we are singing together in a Heavenly choir—our hearts will go on singing” because you taught us well.

Brother Madden was our pastor and performed our marriage ceremony. We remember him with such love. He was dedicated to preaching the word of God, and he had a sense of humor that wouldn’t quit! He was faithful in visiting and was instrumental in the Gap Hill Church of God winning so many of the junior and teen talent competitions in the Church of God. We send our sympathy and much love to the whole family, knowing distance will no longer separate all of us when we reach Heaven.

It was a true honor to have known this Man of God.

Etta, I remember my fellowship and talks with Bro. Madden while you were giving our daughter piano lessons. That was a wonderful time. While I was looking up this obituary I found the obituary of Lee Patterson who passed away on August 9. This brought back many memories of the mornings that Bro. Madden, you, Bro. and Sister King and I had breakfast at LeJuans restaurant in Pickens together. Such a wonderful time of fellowship that will never be forgotten. My prayers for you and your family. I have wonderful.memories of Brother Madden from Gap Hill Church of God when I was a young teen living with my Aunt and Uncle (Wanda and Danny Knight) and Sunday afternoons at the Madden home having lunch and resting before evening service. He was an anointed preacher and has reached his reward. Mrs. Etta, you and the family are in my prayers.
