Richard C. Stokes, 82, husband of of the late Melanie Stokes, “changed addresses” on Thursday, August 11, 2022, surrounded by his family.
Born in Anderson, SC, he was a son of the late George and Elizabeth Amaker Stokes.
Richard was a 22 year veteran of The United States Navy, serving in Vietnam. He retired, at 80 years old, from Detyens Shipyard in Charleston, as Executive Vice President. He was an avid golfer and fisherman, who never met a stranger. Richard enjoyed watching westerns and all the Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel.
He is survived by his daughter, Cinderella Newton and her husband, C. Allen Newton; two sons, Donald Edward Stokes and Richard C. Stokes, II; one stepson, Blake Hinson; seven grandchildren, Louie (Brett), Amy (Andrew), Sarah (Ian), Leslie (Matt), Kayla, Naomi, and Richard C. Stokes, III; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Stokes Grishaw and Jerri Stokes Watstein; brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law and a number of nieces and nephews; mother of his children, Gwendolyn Stokes.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Perry Amaker Stokes and J. Fleetwood Stokes, Sr., and two sisters, Patricia Stokes Watts James and Georgell Stokes Patterson.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. The Funeral Service will follow at 4:00 p.m. in the Downtown Chapel.
