Richard “Dick” N. Shay Jr. passed away peacefully on July 16, 2023, in McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville, South Carolina at the age of 77 after courageously battling cancer for the last several months. Lenore (Pentasuglio) Shay, his beloved wife of over 52 years, was by his side.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Dick was the son of the late Richard N. Shay Sr. and Mary (Seavers) Shay. Upon graduating high school, he served in the US Army and was stationed in Korea. After faithfully serving our country, Dick graduated from the University of Scranton. Following graduation, he worked for Fitchburg Coated Products in Scranton in various business roles. As his career progressed, Dick and Lenore moved to Florida residing in both the Orlando and Tampa areas working for Exxon Mobil and Film Technologies International before retiring in upstate South Carolina.
In addition to Lenore, Dick is survived by his sister, Connie (Shay) Memolo, his daughter, Lindsay (Shay) Nixon, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dick was a kind and gentle man exemplified by the way he lived his life and loved his wife and family. He loved traveling and enjoying time with Lenore. They were seldom apart from each other over their many years together. Dick played high school football and was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed following golf and high school and college football.
In accordance with his wishes, Dick will be cremated with memorial services planned in both Simpsonville and Scranton. The Simpsonville service will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at 3:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Southeast. Scranton services will be announced at a later date.
