Stephen (Steve) Bruce Jones, 77, of Seneca, SC, and Sapphire, NC, passed away on August 17, 2022, at Rainey Hospice House. Steve was born to the late Virginia Sheeks Musser and Oscar Bruce Jones in Manchester, NH, on February 22, 1945. He grew up in Greenville, SC, where he was a 1963 graduate of Greenville High School. He went on to attend Wofford College, where he was a member of the golf team and Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. Steve enlisted in the Navy where he was a submariner on the USS Clamagore, which is now docked beside the USS Yorktown in Charleston, SC. Steve then graduated from the University of North Georgia in Gainesville, GA. His entire career was in merchandising management, most notably being with Tom’s Foods and Moore’s Foods.
Steve loved playing and watching golf. He was a very patriotic person, and was proud of his service in the U.S. Navy. He loved ancestry, finding a good dirt road to drive on, his cats, and all animals. He wore his heart on his sleeve and could fix anything after analyzing it for two to three weeks. His handwriting was atrocious, but his heart was big. Steve never met a stranger.
He is survived by his companion of 11 years, Ellen L. Swann of Seneca, SC and Sapphire, NC; two daughters, Melissa Jones Thomas of Greenville, SC, and Stephanie Ross of California; two brothers, David Jones (Debra) of Atlanta, GA, and Gary Jones of Bend, OR. He dearly loved his nieces and nephew, Patricia Mitchell (Tyler) of Brunswick, GA, Kathryn Fonda (Clark) of Washington, D.C., Grier Meassick (Steven) of Charleston, SC, and David Jones of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by Lindsay Badger of Sydney, Australia and Kate Little (Barrett) of Charleston, SC, whom he considered his stepdaughters; former sisters-in-law Lauretta Jones of St. Simons Island, GA, and Saralee Mollo (Mike) of Hendersonville, NC.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Ray Jones of Waverly, GA.
A memorial service will be held at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown, at 639 N. Main St, Greenville, SC on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow.
