Thelma Owen Huskey, a woman of strong faith in God “went home” peacefully on November 15, with her loving family surrounding her.
She was born September 24, 1930, in Pendleton, SC, the youngest daughter of the late James Newton and Maggie Lee Perkins Owen. She was a Pendleton High School Graduate where she played on the basketball team and later attended Columbia Business College in Columbia, SC, where she met and married young civil engineering student, Bill Huskey. They were members of Earle Street Baptist Church.
Thelma was a loving mother of 5 whose principal occupation was managing the household for her large family, which she did with skill and perseverance. She loved being around people and they loved being around her. Her circle of friends was large. She lived her blessed life with gusto and charm. She was a beautiful lady who always looked like she had just stepped out of a magazine and never seemed to age. She enjoyed traveling through the years with her husband, Bill, in America and Europe. An avid bridge enthusiast, she also loved gardening and enjoyed tennis in her younger years. In these last two years at Cascades, she enjoyed participating in all the activities and especially playing Bingo with her friends, Ursula and Sue and others. She and Bill were avid Gamecock supporters.
Thelma’s joy in life was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband of 73 years, Bill Huskey; 5 children, Gail Huskey Kelly (Chuck), Stanley Duke Huskey (Vickie), Daryl Bryan Huskey (Elizabeth), Wanda Huskey Smith (Ted) and Victor Keenan Huskey(Missy); 17 grandchildren, Trissie, Alison, Jeff, Heather, Hilary, BB, Adam, Heidi, Taylor, Corbin, Keenan, Victoria, Jennings, Olivia, Slade, Gabriella, Hayes; and 6 great grandchildren, Jameson, Scout, MaggieSloan, Jada, Walker and Oakley.
She was preceded in death by 4 sisters and 5 brothers, a grandchild, Gabriel, and a great grandchild, Ava Marie.
The life of Thelma Owen Huskey will be celebrated at a private family service officiated by The Reverend Dr. Stephen Clyborne. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park on Monday, November 20.
The Huskey family would like to thank the staff at Cascades Linville Courts and the nurses and staff at St. Francis for the care and loving kindness she received during these past 2 years and most recently this past week.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Earle Street Baptist Church are suggested.
