Thomas C. Mann, Sr. M.D., 92, husband of Margaret Ann Whitley Mann, died Saturday, February 19, 2022.

Born in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late Alfred C. Mann (attorney and former mayor of Greenville) and Nina Griffin Mann.

He attended Greenville County Schools, graduating from Greenville High School in 1947, where he was Vice President of his Senior Class. He graduated Cum Laude from Clemson University in 1951 and earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston in 1955, where he ranked third in his class. He served his internship at hospitals associated with the Medical College from 1955-1956.
A U.S. Air Force veteran and Captain, he was a Flight Surgeon from 1956-1958, and Commander of the USAF Dispensary, Itami AFB, Japan, from 1956-1957.

Dr. Mann served his residency at the Medical College of Georgia Hospitals in Augusta, GA from 1959-1963, where he was Chief Resident of Surgery 1962-1963. He practiced General and Thoracic Surgery with Carolina Surgical Associates in Greenville from 1963 until 1994. Dr. Mann received certification from the American Board of Surgery in 1964, was President of Greenville Hospital System Medical Staff 1976, President of Greenville Medical Society 1982, and President of SC Chapter of American College of Surgeons 1984. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Greenville Hospital System. He was the first medical doctor ever to be appointed to this board and served as its chairman in 2001. He was Director of Perioperative Services at Greenville Hospital System 1994-1995.

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Mann served on the Clemson Board of Visitors, 1984-1986, was on the Military Heritage Plaza Project Committee, a member of the Clemson Corps and on the Corp’s Board of Directors. He was also on the Scroll Honor project committee and was a proud member of the Senior Platoon and Alumni Senior Platoon.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by Clemson University in 2006. In 2007, he received the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Mark Sanford.

In addition to his wife of 65 years; he is survived by five children, Thomas C. Mann, Jr. M.D. and wife Lisa, Deborah J. Chini and husband Marc, Stephen F. Mann, Carol Leaphart and husband Mark, and Lisa W. Carpenter and husband David, all of Greenville; thirteen grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Alfred C. Mann, Jr., former Congressman James R. Mann, Esquire, Joseph G. Mann, and John P. Mann, Esquire, and Betty Jackson Newton.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown.

RIP Tom.

I am so very sorry to learn of Dr Mann's passing. I worked with him for several years at Carolina Surgical. He was a wonderful person, very caring and inspirational. I have fond memories of working with him and the other doctors in practice with him at that time.

Mrs. Mann and family. I was very sad to see we lost Dr. Mann. Time flys so fast. It seems like only yesterday that I was a child hanging with Tommy and hearing your beautiful southern accent. Thank you so much for all the great times. Dr. Mann will certainly be a great addition to Heaven.

My thoughts and prayers have been with you all. Uncle Tom was a wonderful man and will be remembered fondly.

I have know Dr. Mann, Sr. since I began my practice in Greenville in 1990. He was a great physician that referring physicians and patients could trust to provide the excellent medical care needed when the situation arose. Over the years, he was a leaders, a role model, and an inspiration for medical professionals. Thank you, Dr. Mann, for a life well lived and a career well spent.

Dr. Tom Mann was my brother-in-law. He was always good to me and my family. Watching his memorial service today, brought back so many memories. I especially remember vacations at the beach. He will always be loved and remembered. My heart aches for his family.

One fine man, one the excellent Doctor and Surgeon! Dr. Mann was the Doctors Doctor! I scrubbed for him many, many times @ Greenville General and Memorial and only wish more surgeons were like him today. I never saw him angered. Only highly skilled, kind and caring to his patients and staff. Our loss is Heavens gain.

I went to work in 1979 at GMH as a orderly. Dr Mann took the time to speak to me when no one else did. I still appreciate that. I retired in 2018. So sorry for your loss. Steve Heslewood,

Dr. Mann was one of my favorite surgeons. As an RN I had to call him many times about patients. He was always kind, never rude. He had such a kind spirit to his patients.

To Carol, I am so very sorry to read about your father's passing. I did not know him, but have fond memories of when you and I worked together. You and your family will be in my prayers.

When I saw his obituary, I remembered his face instantly. I was only ten years old when I had an emergency appendectomy, but I remembered his handsome face (I was a girl, after all!) and how sweet he was to me. I just wanted to share that memory. I’m so sorry for your loss.

I was involved in a MVA in 1977 and had to have surgery to have my spleen removed. Dr Thomas Mann did my procedure and probably saved my life that day. He was the best surgeon I ever knew and I went on to become an RN and had the pleasure of knowing him. He was the best of the best and will be missed.Thank you Dr Mann for being there for me. The state of South Carolina lost a true legend. I consider it a great honor that I was fortunate enough to even meet Dr. Mann. He will be greatly missed!

Thomas Mann, or Gdad as I called him, was the smartest and most creative man I have ever met. Every time I saw him he greeted me with upmost excitement and humor. He was caring and courageous and all my aunts and uncles built off of that making us all one great and happy family.
