Mr. Zack Gilbert McColl, of Taylors, journeyed to Heaven to be with The LORD on December 16, 2022 at age 89. His beloved wife, Julia “Judy” Martin McColl, predeceased him.
Mr. McColl, the son of the late James and Alta Copeland McColl, was born in 1933 in Marion, SC. His special childhood pet was a dog named “Cutie” whom he never forgot. After graduating from Marion High School, Zack attended The University of South Carolina in Columbia. He later enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served his country and learned to fly the small planes he loved.
After his military service was complete, Zack worked as a photographer at a TV station in Florence, SC. It was in Florence that Zack met the love of his life, Judy Martin, a young schoolteacher. They married in 1960, had one daughter, and a house (and yard) full of furry and feathered pets, a horse, and two box turtles.
All his life, Zack loved cameras and film. He was an excellent photographer and one of his specialties was bridal portraits. He loved to take his camera and walk on the beach searching for the perfect sunrise. Zack admired (and sometimes collected) 1960’s-era, British sportscars.
Zack was a devoted Carolina Gamecock fan. He loved and supported all their sports programs, but football was his favorite. He and Judy had season tickets for many years and loved to attend bowl games to cheer on their team. Frank McGuire and Dawn Staley were Zack’s favorite coaches of all time.
For many years, Mr. McColl was a faithful blood donor with the Red Cross. He was selfless in his dedication to the needs of others. Zack McColl was kind and patient, a devoted family man, and a friend to everyone he ever met. He loved children and animals, and they loved him in return. His self-deprecating sense of humor endeared him to all.
Zack was a faithful Roman Catholic. After a conversion experience, he and Judy joined Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, where they served The LORD for many years. In 2010, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Saint Mary’s.
Mr. McColl is survived by his only child, Carol Creamer, her husband Chip, and their daughter Penelope Rose. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a doting grandfather. Other survivors include Zack’s sister, Alta Rogers; a host of treasured nieces and nephews; and many cousins from both his and Judy’s sides of the family. He was predeceased by his brother James McColl.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church on Friday January 27, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. followed by the Rite of Committal in the New Silver Brook Cemetery in Anderson, where Zack will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife.
