Maria Aulenbacher, 113, beloved wife of the late August Aulenbacher, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2023.
Born in the Taunus region of Germany, she was the daughter of the late Johannes and Maria Kremer.
Maria lived in the Rhein Region, known as wine country in Germany. She lived most of her adult life in the beautiful thermal spa city of Wiesbaden. Sadly, her husband was a casualty of WWII and did not return home. At 36, Maria was widowed and raised her two young children with the help of her beloved family, and especially her sister, Susanne.
Known to many as Omi, she was always very active and until her 101st year of life, she maintained her own home, did her own shopping and was a magnificent cook and baker. When her sister, Susanne, passed unexpectedly when Maria was 101, she moved to the United States to live with her daughter, Birgit, and her son-in-law, Douglas.
She was proud of her great grandson Alex and tried hard to never miss one of his soccer games. She appreciated life and enjoyed good humor (and wine!) up until her last days.
She was the oldest living resident of South Carolina and in 2022, she acquired the status of oldest living German in the world. During a December television interview with the German media she made a Christmas wish for a stop to war. For this reason, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to World Central Kitchen (Food Relief for Ukraine), https://donate.wck.org/give/417669/ – !/donation/checkout
She is survived by daughter, Birgit Dickerson (Douglas); grandchildren, Suzanne Dickerson, Christina Dickerson (Kurt Schnieders), Sven Aulenbacher, Katrin Aulenbacher, and Anja Aulenbacher; and her great-grandson, Alex Dickerson-Wyse.
