On Saturday, October 27, 2018, Floyd “Ray” Goodwin, Sr., husband of Faye Thompson Goodwin, passed away at the age of 90. Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Elisha Hammond and Maggie Moore Goodwin. Ray retired after 35 years at Southern Bell. He was a faithful member and former deacon of Mountain Creek Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir for 62 years. He was also a founding member of the Piedmont Park Fire Department. He was affectionately known to many as “Papa Ray."
Ray is survived by his wife of 69 years and their four children, Floyd Goodwin, Jr. (Rita), Debbie Dill (Kent), Janet Bricker (Brodie), and Lisa Greene (Mark), all of Greenville; four grandchildren, Niki Peters (Tony), Jeremy Bricker (Welles), Justin Greene (Cristy), and Johnson Greene; and four great-grandchildren, Dillon Peters, Grace Peters, Maggie Rae Bricker, and Wyatt Bricker.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 30 from 6:00 until 7:30 pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home Downtown. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 31 at 11:00 am at Mountain Creek Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
