He was charming and philosophical. He loved nature and enjoyed watching movies. He liked camping and telling stories around the fire, fishing and looking up at the stars in the night sky. He was passionate and hardworking. All of his teeth were ‘sweet.’ He was gentle and respectful to animals of every species and breed (unless that species or breed happened to be a house cat.) He appreciated music of all genres and was an expert storyteller.
My dad could make any baby smile and laugh and relished the effort of doing so. He could whistle so loudly I would have to cover my ears to bear it. He could shoot any liquid through his teeth with impressive distance and precision. He could build anything, and so he did.
He liked to be tan and to smell good. His smile was broad and handsome. He laughed a lot and turned bright red when he was angry. He drove fast and read often. He was a craftsman of words, of wood, of imagination. He was easily both inspiring and inspired. He was sensitive and protective. He very deeply and enthusiastically loved my mom.
He taught me to throw a ball, hammer a nail, drive a car, spell correctly, be observant, suspend judgment, move quickly, swim fearlessly, express authority, love tenderly, and to smell every flower (not just the roses.)
There are certain phrases I will never again hear anyone say to me.
Phrases like, “Find the remote.”
“Get off the moss.”
“Go ask your mother.”
I am most grateful for the time we spent together. I know I am loved and that he was proud. As a parent, I consider this man who was my father through different eyes. He was imperfect, as we all are, but was constantly doing the best he could. I hope my children will someday know that is what I have tried to do.
Thank you, Dad, for all you’ve given me. I love you, and I am proud of you, too.
God Bless in Christ Jesus
