Alice DeMatos, 94, of Greenville and Kiawah Island, passed peacefully in her sleep on August 30, 2021.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Henrique “Henry” V. DeMatos, and her parents, Joseph and Maria Pacheco.
Alice and Henry were grade school sweethearts. They met when they were just nine years old and were married for 50 wonderful years.
Her legacy will continue on with her two adoring daughters, Margaret Scieszka and husband Daniel, of Greenville, and Cynthia Geoffroy of Morristown NJ; her four loving grandchildren, Tina Scieszka McGuire and husband, Jody Muns, Kimberly Scieszka Franzen of Greenville, Brett Geoffroy and wife, Lori, of Mill Valley, CA, and Ashley Geoffroy Austin and husband, Russell, of Austin, TX; and three precious great-grandaughters, Savannah McGuire, Alexis McGuire, and Isabella Franzen also shared in her love.
In addition to her parents and husband, Alice was preceded in death by twin sister, Elsie Custadio and sister, Gilda Raposa.
Prior to retirement, Alice worked in the Medical Records Department of Piedmont Orthopedic Clinic, but she always said her most important job was being a wife, mother, “Grammy,” “Vavo,” and friend. Alice loved and cared for all of her family, including her kitties. She was known for her amazing cooking, thousands of Christmas cookies, apple and blueberry pies, and mouthwatering poundcake. Alice was a founding member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
Although she is probably asking, “is that necessary?,” a memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. The family requests that those in attendance wear a mask and be mindful of social distancing. Burial will take place at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Charleston at a later date.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at the Cascades, The Parker, and Regency SouthernCare Hospice for their love and care of our precious mother.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alice’s name to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3871 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, Johns Island, SC 29455.
