Zieynab Aloma Wheeler, wife of the late George Lane Wheeler, died Friday, May 22, 2020, at her home in Greenville, SC surrounded by her loving family.

Aloma was born in London, England to the late Albert and Irene Messey Khadri. She was brought up in the church and was of Christian faith and loved the Lord. She received her bachelor’s degree in child psychology, while working as a nurse during WWII in Dover England. Aloma met her late husband in England and became the first war bride to arrive in Greenville, SC in 1946. She later became a Store Keeper for Union Carbide Corporation where she worked for 18 years while raising a family. After her retirement, Aloma filled her time volunteering for the Senior Action Center and serving as a teacher for the Teen Parent Program Center for over 15 years. Her focus was teaching teen parents how to knit and crochet, as well as teaching basic life care for newborns.

In addition to her loving husband and parents, Aloma was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Land; and her great grandson, Austin Wheeler.

She is survived by sons, David Wheeler, and Robert Wheeler (Darlene); son-in-law, Jim Land; grandchildren, Lisa Land (Mike Bush), Jeremy Land (Marcela), Lara Land (Tyrone Jones), Maura Adams (Randy), Alex Wheeler (Sonya), and Mandy Baldwin (Shane Cooper); great grandchildren, Lauren, Alexis, Saniya, Isabela, Lucas, Noah, Austin, AJ, Cole; and great-great grandchildren, Aria, Nahla, Max.

Friends are welcome to visit Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest, Wednesday, May 27, 2020, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. for viewing and to leave notes of condolence for her family. Due to the CDC and State of South Carolina public guidelines for social distancing, there will be no public visitation period for her family to receive friends at the funeral home.

A private graveside service will be held Thursday, May 28, 2020, at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

The family encourages those at home to share your condolences on the tribute wall and send a "Hug from Home”.

I helped Mrs. Wheeler for many years at the Buck Tolbert State Farm insurance agency. she was a most interesting lady. We loved hearing her tell of driving an ambulance during the war! She was very passionate about her ministry to the teen mothers. I am sure this leaves a huge hole in your hearts, but she is safe in the arms of Jesus now!

Grandmas are the best part of being a kid, they make all the wrongs right. Our Grandma was a blessing to many of us beyond family, she had a way about her that made everyone want her to be their Grandmother too. We are so glad we got to share your love guidance and wisdom with so many generations. We will miss you more than you know, however we will not forget the things you taught us over the years. Be kind, be truthful and be yourself at all costs. Love you Grandma

Mrs. Wheeler was an extraordinary lady. She gave so much of herself to our school program as a volunteer. What she taught those young mothers were life skills and life lessons they will not forget. She told us, she always was told to share your talent and she did. I loved her British accent and her love of tea.
