Zieynab Aloma Wheeler, wife of the late George Lane Wheeler, died Friday, May 22, 2020, at her home in Greenville, SC surrounded by her loving family.
Aloma was born in London, England to the late Albert and Irene Messey Khadri. She was brought up in the church and was of Christian faith and loved the Lord. She received her bachelor’s degree in child psychology, while working as a nurse during WWII in Dover England. Aloma met her late husband in England and became the first war bride to arrive in Greenville, SC in 1946. She later became a Store Keeper for Union Carbide Corporation where she worked for 18 years while raising a family. After her retirement, Aloma filled her time volunteering for the Senior Action Center and serving as a teacher for the Teen Parent Program Center for over 15 years. Her focus was teaching teen parents how to knit and crochet, as well as teaching basic life care for newborns.
In addition to her loving husband and parents, Aloma was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Land; and her great grandson, Austin Wheeler.
She is survived by sons, David Wheeler, and Robert Wheeler (Darlene); son-in-law, Jim Land; grandchildren, Lisa Land (Mike Bush), Jeremy Land (Marcela), Lara Land (Tyrone Jones), Maura Adams (Randy), Alex Wheeler (Sonya), and Mandy Baldwin (Shane Cooper); great grandchildren, Lauren, Alexis, Saniya, Isabela, Lucas, Noah, Austin, AJ, Cole; and great-great grandchildren, Aria, Nahla, Max.
Friends are welcome to visit Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest, Wednesday, May 27, 2020, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. for viewing and to leave notes of condolence for her family. Due to the CDC and State of South Carolina public guidelines for social distancing, there will be no public visitation period for her family to receive friends at the funeral home.
A private graveside service will be held Thursday, May 28, 2020, at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
