Billy Alexander Garrett, 91, devoted husband of the late Martha Garrett, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2024.
Born in Fountain Inn, SC, but raised in Greenville, he was a son of the late L. C. Garrett, Sr. and Lola Garrett.
Billy was a graduate of Greenville High School and a veteran of the US Air Force who served in Germany, immediately after the ending of WWII.
Not long after his military service ended, Billy began dating his childhood neighbor, Martha Ann, and they were married in November 1960 thus beginning many years of love and devotion to one another.
Billy spent most of his career in the textile industry working for G.E. and Hollingsworth. In his leisure time he could be found creating beautiful pieces of furniture or crafting their custom-built house on Lake Hartwell. His desire to spend more time with his wife led Billy to retire in 1994 at the age of 62. Together they traveled by car, boat, and train to visit Hawaii and Alaska. They also toured the Outer Banks and all along the New England Coast. Being very accomplished, Billy was an auto technician, licensed plumber, licensed deep-sea diver, saxophonist, and an avid sports fan. He enthusiastically watched Clemson, Carolina, and Citadel teams!
Billy was a member of East Park Church in Greenville until he moved to Simpsonville in 1979. He then joined Five Forks Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and volunteered on Wednesday nights in the kitchen as the tea maker.
Billy was highly respected among his colleagues, friends, and family and was considered to be their rock, offering encouragement and support when needed. His memory will forever be cherished by their two wonderful children, Leslie Clark (Chris) and Monty Garrett (Sandy); four precious grandchildren, Christine Massey (Michael), Natalie Garrett, April Garrett and Billy Lynn Clark (Savannah); two sisters-in-law, Rachel Suddeth and Linda Walker (Ernest) and a host of loved nieces and nephews.
In addition to his loving wife and parents, he was predeceased by a brother, L. C. “Buddy” Garrett, Jr.; sisters, Nora Garrett Barnhill and Anne Garrett Smith; and brother-in-law, Joe Suddeth.
A visitation will be held Friday, February 9, 2024 from 9:15 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. at Five Forks Baptist Church followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Graceland East Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Five Forks Baptist Church, by mailing to 112 Batesville Road, Simpsonville, SC, 29681 or by visiting www.fiveforks.org.
