Mere words are never quite adequate at capturing the essence of any person or in drawing from the deep well of feeling implicit in the phrase “loved one.” But my mother Catherine would be an extraordinary woman in any language and by any measure. One of the four Matheson sisters, Catherine was a newly registered nurse at a Chicago hospital when her shy beauty caught the eye and captured the heart of a local reporter, who arranged for an introduction. That fateful encounter produced the Raden Family, which in short order gave the world myself and my nine sisters and brothers, who subsequently populated the country with a diaspora of in-laws and offspring whose lives comprise a living testament to Catherine’s boundless capacity for nurture, profound spirituality, and her high esteem for science, the arts and nature. As we all now adjust to living in a world incalculably colder and meaner without Catherine in it, those of us lucky enough to have been touched by her astonishingly selfless generosity can move forward confident in always having Catherine alive in our hearts to light our way.

Mom, you were the kindest person I have ever known.  You helped shape the person that I am today and I thank you.  I will miss your beautiful voice, your warm hugs and your loving smile.  My girls will miss their loving Nana. I will be okay knowing you are watching over me and will be waiting to greet me with open arms.  I love you Mama️

Mom, you were my role model. With your quiet kindness and selfless love, you are the woman I wish to be, the perfect example for my children of the people they should endeavor to become. I love you and I miss you more every day.

My mother Catherine Raden was the first love of my life. She was always there when you needed her (even when you thought you did not). She was calm in the face of chaos, and always kind and generous to family and strangers alike. She liked to travel the possessed and adventurous side. I'll never forget having to follow her down a dizzying goat path descending the top of a cliff above the Pacific ocean, or the time she ascended a rock face using a rope while wearing a 5-mil wet-suit after having snorkeled in the kelp forests off the Sonoma coast. We've white-water rafted and hiked many national parks. I am only one of her 10 children that she traveled with. I can only imagine the memories they may have of similar adventures.

I'll miss you mom!

My Mother, Catherine Raden was beautiful inside and out.  In my entire life, I never heard her speak an unkind work about anyone.  She loved nature, books, angels, her children.  She lived a good long life.  She is an angel among her beloved angels in heaven.  Rest peacefully until we meet again my sweet mother.

Dear Nana, you were a kind, loving woman who spread warmth around. Throughout several relocations, I  have kept a little beautiful glass object that you once gave me for Christmas because it reminds me of you and sends me good vibes.
