Cecil Ernest Lowery, 104, of Greenville, loving husband of Sarah Robinson Lowery, was welcomed into the presence of the Lord and Savior Monday April 22, 2024, at home surrounded by his family.
Born in Henrietta, NC, to parents Willie Lee Lowery and Eva McCraw Lowery, he lived in the Henrietta area until the family relocated to Greenville, SC seeking opportunity in the textile industry. Cecil began working at Mills Mill at age 16. At age 20, when duty called, he joined the Army in 1941 during World War II, where he served primarily in Iceland in the 420nd Quartermasters Battalion. After the war, he returned to Greenville where he met Sarah, his pride and joy, who was his wife of 72 years. He ultimately became the outside supervisor at Mills Mill, and ever the entrepreneur he founded his own lawn maintenance business, which he happily worked well into his nineties.
Cecil, a man of great faith, was a longtime member of San Souci Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and on the grounds and maintenance committee. He later became a member of Reedy River Baptist Church where he continued to inspire others with his Christian walk of faith.
Cecil enjoyed serving others as evidenced by his long-time service to the Berea Lion’s Club. He was quick to lend a helping hand to family, neighbors, and friends, performing random acts of kindness well into his senior years. He enjoyed gardening and loved to share his produce and flowers in the community. He also ministered to the homebound by visiting sharing his baked goods.
His single greatest legacy is his family whom he lovingly shepherded. He is survived by his son Lynn Lowery (Beverly), daughters Cecilia Williams (Doug) and Susan Robbins (Tony); grandchildren David Lowery (Victoria), Mark Lowery (Sara), Elizabeth Johnson (Brett), Tena Cagle (Mel), Melissa Fair (Chris Tatum), Bryan Fair, and Heather Gilliam (Colt). He is also survived by four great grandchildren, Miranda, Esmè, Sylvan, and Myles.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Furman, Hoyle, Glynn, and Dewey Lowery as well as sisters, Lorena Mosteller and Mildred Mostella, his son-in-law, Doug Williams, and his daughter-in-law, Brenda Lowery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 24, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Northwest. The funeral service to honor Cecil’s life will be held on April 25, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at Reedy River Baptist Church.
