Charles H. Davis, III, 88, of Greenville, SC passed away peacefully on February 10, 2024.
Born on April 12, 1935, in Conway, SC he was the son of the late Hazel Cox and Charles H. Davis, Jr. He moved to Greenville in 1937 and was a graduate of Greenville High School, Class of 1954. He attended Clemson University, subsequently working for J.E. Sirrine Co. and Daniel Construction Co. (now Fluor Corporation), eventually settling in Macon, GA in 1959. Charles was active in the Macon Junior Chamber of Commerce and served as Vice President of the Jaycees. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1962.
He formed Davis Construction Company in 1961 in Macon, with many commercial buildings constructed in various cities in Georgia, including medical offices, banks, churches, a hospital and sewage treatment facilities. Charles sold this company in 1967, moved back to Greenville, and eventually partnered with James Nance and Guerry Burnett to form the commercial/industrial real estate business of DNB Group. The DNB Group was instrumental in locating sites for the BMW plant in Greer and Michelin in Greenville, as well as Michelin in Dothan, Alabama.
Charles was a former member of the Poinsett Club and National Wildlife Federation. Nicknamed “Be-Bop” in high school, Charles was an avid shag dancer who loved beach music and the beach. He is remembered for snapping his fingers and shuffling his feet to the “old-time beach music.” He was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as a dedicated Clemson fan. He also had a love for old classic boats and cars. In his younger years, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at Lake Hartwell on his boats, and at Garden City Beach.
Charles is survived by his son, Brad Davis (Sharon) of Greenville; two daughters, Camille Seyfried (Bill) of Palm Harbor, Florida and Angie Hale (Mark) of Gainesville, Georgia; four grandchildren, Lauren Krankowski (Ronnie), Kathryn McCain (James), Caroline Liller (Kevin) and Cara Hale; three great-grandchildren, Leland Krankowski, Kason Liller, and Cora McCain; and numerous relatives and friends in the Greenville area.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Shirley Dowling Davis; sister, Jimmie Bagwell; and brother-in-law, Curtis Bagwell.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 14, 2024 from 12:30 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. A Celebration of Life for Charles will begin in the Downtown Chapel at 1:30 p.m., with burial to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
