Charlotte Owings Crout, 82, native of Greenville, SC, beloved wife of James Harold Crout, Sr., passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2022.

Born in Greenville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mable Owings.

Charlotte and Harold were married for 63 years. Charlotte was a loving wife, devoted mother, and grandmother. Most importantly, she was a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Charlotte had an immense love of children that was lived out during her thirty-year career. She taught four-year-old kindergarten at the Trinity Lutheran Child Development Center, as well as serving on the SC Foster Care Review Board. She was an active and longstanding member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Charlotte was loved by many for her personal card ministry.

In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by their son, James Crout (Susan); their daughter, Patricia Crout Gwinn (McCrady); three grandchildren, Jay Crout (Mary Ann), Laurel Crout Hammond (Tee), and Claudia Gwinn Tuttle (Paul); four great grandchildren, and her brother, John Owings (Wanda), all of Greenville.

There will be a private burial service. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 25, 2022 from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m., at the Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown, 639 North Main Street, Greenville SC, 29601.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fostering Great Ideas: Reimagine Foster Care, 321 Pimlico Road, Greenville SC, 29607, fgi4kids.org or to Trinity Lutheran Church, 421 North Main Street, Greenville, SC 29601, trinitylutheran.ws.

I was so very sorry to hear of Charlotte’s passing. She took me under her wing when I started working at Trinity CDC, especially when I divorced. I will never forget her genuine kindness. She was a beautiful soul. Thinking of Harold and the rest of the family.

James & Patricia and the whole Crout Family, I want to extend my condolences to you all at the passing of your sweet mom. She was such a lovely lady in every sense of the word. Tricia, James, and family, I am so very sad to hear about your dear mother. She was such a sweetie and I feel so fortunate to have known her for so many years. Sending love to you all and keeping you in my prayers.
