Clara Keasler Sutton

Clara Keasler Sutton, 103, of The Magnolias Assisted Living of Easley, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2006 at four o?clock in the afternoon. Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Jefferson Davis and Harriet Voyles Keasler and widow of Oliver Wright O.W. Sutton. A native of the Sunset community in Pickens County, she was a resident of Northgate Heights community of Greenville for over 50 years. She later resided at Lewis Village and Westminster Retirement Home prior to moving to The Magnolias of Easley. She was a graduate of Central High School and Draughans Business College in S.C. For many years she worked as a legal secretary at the Haynesworth and Haynesworth Law Firm and was co-founder and officer of Sutton?s Shoes, Inc. She was a member of The Rose Society and the Zonta Club. Mrs. Sutton was an avid gardener and as a member of The Northgate Community Club, she acquired and directed the original planting of dogwood trees in the median of North Main Street. Mrs. Sutton was a member of Greenville First Baptist Church a member of the Loyalty Sunday School Class. For many years, she and her husband cared for the plants in the rotunda at the church. She was a pillar of strength in her family and will be remembered as a pioneer among women who ventured out to make a career in the business world. Surviving are a sister Winnie K. Brezeale of Sunset, SC; two sons and daughters-in-law, Major General B.K Sutton and wife Lois of Greenville, SC and Mr. Robert M. Sutton and wife Sue of Sunset, SC; three grandchildren, Robert A. Sutton of Greenville, SC, Jon Jeffrey Sutton of Durham, NC, and Lisa Anne Phillips of Pittsburgh, PA; five great-grandchildren, Matthew and Lauren Sutton of Greenville, SC and Taylor, Paige, and Julia Phillips of Pittsburgh, PA. She was preceeded in death by a grandson, Jay Steven Sutton, a granddaughter, Martha Jane Sutton, and nine brothers and sisters. Visitation will be held Sunday, December 10, 2006 from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Graveside services will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park on Monday, December 11, 2006 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Baxter Wynn officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greenville First Baptist Church Opening New Doors Fund, 847 Cleveland St., Greenville, SC 29601.
